Description

i2. F. LINCOLN.
Knob-Spindle Fasteners. No.156,9 32. ffgten ted Nov. 17,1874.
J N fiVETTt/ohw ATTORNEYS,
UNT ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE F. LINCOLN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN G. HANCOCK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-SPlND-LE FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,932, dated Novtniber 17,1874; application filed October 3i, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE F.L1NcoLN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Knob-Spindle Look, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a little slide-bolt inside of the rose or escutcheon-plate, to lock the knob-spindle by sliding into a notch in the edge ofa disk on the spindleyalso, inside of the escutcheon -plate, the said slide having a pawl with a handle for Working it pivoted to it, so as to drop into the slot of the escutcheonplate, through which it projects, to lock the bolt when shoved forward, and it has a spring for throwing it back when the pawl is pulled out of the slot to release the slide-bolt. The object is to provide a simple and efficient inside lock for fastening the door of water and other closets and sleeping-rooms, 850., temporarily, without having to change the key from one side of the door to the other.
Figure l is a horizontal section of a knobt latch, showing the application of my invention and Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of the esoutcheonplate and section of the spindle.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the knob-spindle; B, the escutcheonplate; G,the disk on the spindle, with a notch, D, for the slide-bolt; E, the bolt, and F the pawl for working it. The disk is arranged in a central recess in the inside of the escutcheOn.
plate, and the boltis arranged in a recessin the same side, radial to the disk, and in a lateral extension, G, of the escutcheon-plate. The pawl has a knob, H, attached for manipulat ing it, and it is pivoted to the bolt and arranged to swing into and out of the slot in the escutcheon-plate, in which it moves, so as to fasten the bolt in the notch in the disk by dropping into the slot and fastening therein by its beveled end, which is pressed under the undercut wall of the end of the slot at I by the spring J, which also throws the bolt back when the pawl is disengaged to unlock theknob-spindle.
This contrivance makes a very eficient and desirable lock with but little expense. The bolt might be arranged to slide directly into a notch in the spindle; but it is preferable to use the disk, because it makes a stronger fast ening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- The slide-bolt E, locking-pawl F, and spring J, in combination with thenotched disk 0 and the knob-spindle, substantially as specified.
