R. HUNT BOX OR CARTON FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS Jan. 5; 1926.

UNITED stares nowtnunrrnnr, or nonnou, ENGLAND.
Box on OARTQN FOR ELECTRIC AMPS.
Application filed. June 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROWLAND HUNT, a British subject, and resident of 130 Shacklewell Lane, London, E. 8, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in a Box or Carton for Electric Lamps, of which the, following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved box or carton for holding electric lamps and may be of the type which fold flat and are made from one piece of thin cardboard or like material. I
The invention has to do more particularly with an improved means for holding the cap end of the lamp andhas for its object to provide a simple and reliable means which can be quickly applied when the lamp has been placed in thebox or carton and which will centre the lamp satisfactorily therein. The method of holding the glass end may be as desired.
According to the invention the box which is of the rectangular type is provided with an extension to each side at that end which is to hold the cap of the lamp. This extension is of improved form in that it is tapered preferably more on one side than the other and this side which I will call the more tapered side is shorter than the other and is joined to the outermost edge of the extension by a curved edge which may dip down slightly from the said side and is then carried upwardly to the outermost edge, the shape being approximately a sloped J or conchoid.
I have found that by using this particular shape I can provide a hold or grip on both the cap by the part having the shorter curve and also a hold on the glass adjoining the cap by the part having the longer curve. The shape of the curve 8 may be modified so as to grip or hold on either the cap only or onto the glass only but I prefer to use this holdor grip on both parts.
The tapered sides can be at the same angle if desired and the curved edge may be modified. to suit any particular lamp. An advantageous feature of this invention is that the cap end of the lamp cannot easily be pu hed to the side of the carton but is kept about central in the box.
wil n t ascr e my tw ties w th PATENT OFFICE.
1924. Serial No. 718,374.
reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a one piece blank of thin cardboard suitable for making one of my improved boxes and of a shape suitable for use with electric lamps of the kind now commonly used.
Fig. 2 is an end view of a box made up from a blank as seen in Fig. 1 and shows a lamp in the box the cap end only of the of junction between the four sides and are, i
in the example drawn, more inclined on their sides 7. The sides 7 are the more tapered and are the shorter sides above referred to. A small recess is made at 6" to facilitate folding the extensions inwardly. From the outer ends of the sides 7 the extensions are cut at 8 in the curved manner above described. Each of these extensions is adapted to be folded inwardly as seen in Figs. 2 and In Fig. 2 three sides are so turned or folded in and one extension, say exten sion 4* is ready to be turned in onto the lamp to complete the holding of the cap end thereof.
It will be seen that the curved parts 8 contact with the cap near its edge at 9 and with the adjacent part of the glass or bulb at 10 and thus the part 8 has a grip or hold on both the cap and the glass thereby producing a very effective support ,for the cap end of the lamp and one which is very easily arranged and easily opened when the lamp is to be removed.
The means for holding the opposite end of the lamp may be as desired and I have shown a very effective support but do not here describe it in detail as the construction and working of that part can be ascertained from the specification of my Letters Patent Serial Number 665,421,.
W a 1 l m is:
A carton for holding an electric lamp and having a plurality of flat sides the adjacent ends of at least three of which at one end of the box have extensions of tapered form one side of which is longer than the other and provided with a (illlVFCl part extending from the outer end of the shorter side to the extremity of the said extensions said curved part being arranged to ellect a grip on both the cap of an elee- 10 trio lamp and the glass adjacent the cap; the other end of the box having any suitahle means for holding the other end of the lamp.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this application.
