To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, HARRY A.,D oUGLAs, citizen of the United States, residing at Bronson, in the county of Branch and State 6 of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electrical Con necters, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to circuit connecting clips, the clip of my invention being adapted to eectively grip wire throughout a substantial portion of its length to insure firm mechanical assembly of wire and clip and perfect continuity of the circuit portion thereat.
The clip of my invention comprises a `U shaped piece of sheet metal having one side inclusive of a lateral portion which is curled against the opposite side of the clip base.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the clip is apertured in its ends to receive a bolt which serves to clamp the sides of the clip toward each other and to further curl the curled lateral portion to further wrap the clip at its base portion firmly about the wire that is laid within and against the base portion of the clip and through the bore jointly formed by the base portion and the curled clip side portion. There are preferably two suchlateral curled clip side portions at one side of the clip and between which the apertured portion of this clip side is disposed. The clamping bolt or binding screw which is employed to hold the wire in place thus performs its function throughn out an appreciable length of the wire and through the intermediation of a curled clip portion which is further curled by the clamping screw into tight engagement with the wire.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a circuit continuing device equipped with clips of my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sectional views respectively taken on lines 2--2 and 3--3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of another form of circuit continuing device equipped with clips of my invention; Fig. 5 is a view ofthe inner end of the plug entering into the structure of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a view illustrating a blank piece of sheet metal capable of being shaped into the clip of my invention; and Fig. 7 a perspective view of the clip with a continuingfportion thereof broken away. The two forms of circuit continuing devices illustrated are e'ach inclusive of a. metallic cylindrical shell 1 formed at each end with bayonet channels 2, 2 respectively adapted t0 receive bayonet pins 3 and 4 respectively providedfupon contact carriers 5 and 6. The contact 5 is illustrated in the form of an incandescent lamp whose lilament 7 is connected in circuit when bothcontact carriers are assembled by the shell 1, as will more fully appear. The contact carrier 6 is in the form of a connecting plug which carries two contact terminals 8 and 9 which are in the form of metallic strips extending lengthwise through the insulating body portion of the plug and which are formed at their outer ends with the wire attaching clips of my invention.
The structure of Fig. 1 is a so-called single pole device, the lamp base having a metallic sheath 10, constituting one terminal of the lamp filament 7, and engageable with the metallic shell 1 which is grounded. The base of the lamp is provided with a central inner contact which constitutes the remaining terminal of the filament and is engaged with an outwardly spring pressed contact 12 which is co-axial with the shell. The contact 8, in the structure of Fig. 1, is in electrical connection with a metallic sheath 13 surrounding this contact carrier and also engageable with the shell 1. The other contact 9, in this structure, is bent at its inner end to project across the axis of the shell to be `engageable by another outwardly spring pressed contact 13 which is co-axial with the shell and contact 12 and electrically connected with the latter by the spring barrel 14 and the spring 15 that is disposed within this barrel and which is interposed between the contacts 12 and 13 to press the same outwardly.
The structure of Fig. 4 is a so-called two pole device. The filament 7 in this structure has two contacts 16 and 17 upon the inner end of its base that are respectively engageable by the outwardly spring pressed contacts 18 and 19. These contacts are electrically connected, respectively, with out- Wardly spring pressed contacts 20 and 21,-
the springs 22, 23, pressing the contacts out* wardly. ln the structure of Fig. e the inner ends of contacts 8 and 9 are bent outwardly respectively to engage contacts 2O and 21.
It is obvious that changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my in-` vention.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following: y
A wire receiving clip comprising a U shaped piece of sheet metal apertured in its ends to receive a bolt and having one side inclusive of an intermediate portion, which is the apertured part of this clip side, and two outer lateral portions which are curled against the opposite side of the clip base.
