MEANS FOR UTILIZATION OF ENERGY OF THE EXHAUST GASES OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES BY THE STRIKING F SAID GASES.
Application filed August 26, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnrrnrriorr AUoUsr Borsnx, a citizen of the German Republic, residin at Leipzig, Germany, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Means for the Utilization of the Energy of the Exhaust Gases of Internal-Combustion Engines by the Striking of said Gases (for which I have filed applications in Germany on 8th February 1916 and 2nd November,
1919), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the utilization of the burnt explosive gas mixtures of internal combustion engines and it has for its object, besides the muifling of the noise and the con sumption of the smoke which are already realized with the aid of other devices, to produce an increase of efiiciency and a saving of fuel. lVith this object in view the striking of the exhaust gases is made use of by which said gases are formed into a gas cake situated in front of the exhaust pipe. Through the formation of this gas cake the silencing and the consumption of smoke are effected.
This invention relates to mufflers for internal combustion engines.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of muffler wherein gases forming internal combustion engines will be introduced into the muffler in opposed streams.
A second important objectof the invention is to provide an improved form of mufiler wherein gases will be introduced in opposed streams in such relation to the exhaust of the muffler that their passage through such exhaust will be delayed.
With the above and other objects in View as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combiations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is an outline sectional view through one form of muflier constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View of this form at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but a showing a modified form of muffier.

In these mufflers there is provided a substantially spherical main body portion 6 into which the exhaust gases are conducted forming internal combustion engine by means of alined and opposed inlet pipes a which terminate within the body Z) in spaced relation. At point angles to the axis of the pipe a is an exhaust neck 0 which may either be a short spherical neck as shown in Figures 1 and 2 or may be a long curvingly tapered neck as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The axis of the exhaust of the inlet pipe a is preferably more remote from the neck 0 than the equatorial diameter of the spherical which lies at right angles to the axis of the neck 0. shown in dotted lines at a, in Figures 1 and 2, the axis may coincide with such diameter.
Furthermore, opposite the neck on the body may be provided with an internal beveled portion h.
In some instances it is found desirable to have the gases passing through the neck flow through helical passages j. With this form of muflier the inflowing gases infringe upon each other and, owing to the eddy currents set up through the spherical body flow quietly and smoothly through the neck 0.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to con fine the invention to'the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a muffler of the class described, a spherical body, inlet, pipes entering said body'from opposite sides and in alinement, an exhaust neck extending from the body at right angles to said inlet pipes, and vanes in said exhaust neck providing helical passages therethrough.
