To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, Gnonen E. OAKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Door-Motor Controls, the ollowing'being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of'tl e one-form ofmy invention which]: at present'deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of invention, reference maybe had .to the following specification and to the accompanying drawings forming a I part thereof.
My invention relates to a pneumatic re- .versing door engine which is controlled manually. from a distant point for its usual operations and automatically controlled in the event of the door in its closing movement encountering an obstruction.
Referring to the drawing, D represents a door of the sliding type having on its forward edge a sh oe Ssuch as is commonly known in the art and consisting of a bar'or strip that is mounted on the door and will yield inwardly againstthe doorin case it encounters some object such "as a car passenger when the door is closing. In my present arrangement the shoe S is permanently grounded and when pressed inwardly will engage an insulated contact10 on the door and cgnnect fit to ground. The contact 10 is connected as .iscust'omary to a vbrush 16 which fast on'the' door and travels in contact with a stationary conductor 17, as the door moves to and fro.
The conductor 17 is connected to a contact point 8 whichis. connected to a similar contact 9 whenever there'is air pressure on ,a small cylinder and piston 1 which -forces a contact plate outward against the points 8 and 9. The same cylinder 1 isin communication with door-closing cylinder G of the reversible 'door operating engine so that, whenever'the door is being closed by pressure in the cylinder .C, "the "contact points 8 and 9 are electricallyconnected, but are disconnected at all other times. These magnetsserve to control valves of any'desired type (conventionally illustrated) which admit air pressure to the cylinders C and 0 that throw the valve- -b ar- 2 of the engine to left or to right to givethe engine its corresponding reverse movements to either close on open the door. S uch -reversers; comprising magnets and valve-bar cylinders are *well known (see U. S. Patent 1,479,386,
dated J an. 1,1924) and require no further description, except to point out that the opening cylinder 'O- is=larger than the closing cylinder G so that if air is admitted to both at -the same time, O will overpower G and move the valve-bar to give the engine its door;opening movement "in spite of the pressure existing in the closing cylinderC The purpose of this is to give 0 the power, under control of the door shoe, to produce the opening action of the engine without the necessity of first re- :(easing the pressure in the closing cylinder This principle of a master door-opening agency that will overpower the door-closing agency in the emergency of an obstruction being encountered by the door may be embodied in various different ways. The advantage of it' is that the closing agent 'reporarily overpowered, and resumes its duty as soon as the emergency ispast and the overmastering force removed.
There is also provided at the door D contact points 4 and 5 which are separated whenever the door is fully closed, but are in contact with each other at all other times. These contacts are in the circuit of closingmagnet C and serve to disable that magnet when the door is closed, the control being then vested in the opening-magnet 0. Moreover, when switch A is pushed into contact with points 2 and 3, thereby energizing cl0sing-magnet C, it simultaneously energizes a relay R whose armature 12 then switches the circuit of opening-magnet 0 from ground to a battery B Since switch A remains in the position to which it has been pushed, both C and R will remain energized during the door-closing operation, at the end of which they are released by the open ing of contacts 4 and'5. The connection of the battery B to magnet 0 during this period, will permit of a flow of current from said battery to magnet O in the event of the door-shoe S being forced by an obstruction into contact with point 10. The
points 8 and 9 which are in that branch of the opening circuit which leads to the doorshoe are closed at this time by the pressure in the closing-cylinder C For the usual normal operation the only thing necessary, for opening the door when it is closed, is the momentary pushing up of button-switch against points 13 and 14. That will close a circuit from battery B, to points 13, 14, to magnet O, to relay armature 12 to ground. 'This is the usual.
manually controlled opening circuit for magnet O and is supplied with current from battery B. Thereupon magnet 0 will actuate its valve to admit air to valve cylinder O which will shift the engine valves to cause the door-opening movement. That will require but a momentary action of the electrical parts and the manual switch will, when released, return automatically to-its intermediate position. For closing the door when it is open, the button-switch'is pressed down. in the opposite direction against points 2' and 3, and then it does not snap back to its intermediate position but remains in contact with 2 and 3. This establishes a circuit from battery B, to points 2 and 3, to points at and 5 which are now closed, the door being open, to closing-magnet C to ground and also to relay ,magnet R and ground. Since the button-switch does not in this case snap back to its intermediate Position, but remains 'where it has been pushed, in contact with 2 and 3, the closlng Cll'CHliJ ust'traced 1S maintained while the door is closing, being-finally opened at'contacts d and 5 when the door is fully closed. This affords the opportunity for the emergency energizing of openingmagnet O, in case the door meets an obstruction during the period when closing magnet C is energized. But since the cylinder 0 controlled by O is larger than the cylinder C controlled by C, the latter will be overpowered by 0 The circuit for thismaster action of 0 -will be from battery B to 12 (now held attached by R) to-magnet O, to points 8 and 9 (now closed by air pressure in- C to bar 17 brush 16, point 10, shoe S and to ground. This circuit is supplied with current from battery B by the battery connection which 12 establishes and includes the branch leading to the door shoe. Thus during the normal door-closing operation, the. emergency, master action-of the door-closing means is always possible. The eflect of the master action is to reverse the engine by shifting the air pressure from cylinder C to cylinder 0 the release of pressurein C opens contact points 8 and 9, thereby breaking the aforesaid emergency circuit of magnet O, releasing the pressure in master cylinder 0 and permitting the cylinder C to resume its control of the engine valves. Thereupon the engine again reverses to door-closing movement. It the obstruction is not removed the emergency action will be repeated and the re-reversing will be continued so long as the obstruction is present. Ultimately the closing operation will prevail and the doorwill standin its normal closed position, its final movement breaking the connection between points 4 and 5 which opens the circuits of C and R independently of its button-switch. It will be therefore manifest that while the usual manual controlof the door is provided for, there exists during the closing operation an opportunity for the temporary, emergency action of the door-opening means which include the overpowering agency, viz the cylinder O in the present specific apparatus.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A door control system comprisingdoor closing: control means, door-opening control means capable of dominating the door closing control means, and emergency means for causing the door opening control means to temporarily dominate the door closing control means. 1

5. A door control system comprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, two electro-magnetically controlled valve shift-, ers, one of which is capable of dominating the other, manual switches controlling both Cal valve shifters, means for maintaining the door opening valve shifter in operative condition during the door closing period, and an emergency device also controlling the the dominating valve shifter.
6. A door control system comprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, pneumatically actuated valve shifters for said valves, one of which is capable of dominating the other, electro-magnetic devices controlling said shifters, manual switches con-- trolling the circuits to said electro-magnetic devices, and an emergency device controlling the circuit to the magnetic device which governs the dominating valve shifter. 7. A door closing system comprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, two electro-magneticallycontrolled valve shifters, one of which is capable of dominating the other, a switch controlling the control circuit of the dominating valve shifter, said switch being in the control circuit of the other valve shifter, and a travelling emergency switch also controlling the circuit to the dominating valve shifter.
8. A door control system comprising a reversing door engine, door opening and closing valves therefor, a valve shifter for the door closing valve, a controlling circuit therefor, a switch for maintaining said circuit during the door closing period, a valve shifter for the door opening valve capable of dominating the first mentioned shifter, a circuit therefor controlled by the door closing valve shifter, and an emergency switch in said controlled circuit.
9. A door control system comprising a door engine having valves to secure door opening and 7 door closing functions, an electrically controlled valve shifter for the door closing valve, an electrically controlled valve shifter for the door opening valve, two battery connections in the control circuit of said last mentioned valve shifter, a manual switch controlling said circuit under one of the two battery connections, an emergency switch controlling the circuit under its other battery connection, and a'swit'chin the t-on trol circuit .Of'Pthe-qfirst 'mention'ed :va-lve shifter for establishing the last mentioned battery connection. 10..A door control "systemcomprising a door engine, reversing valves therefonvalve "shifters controlling the respective *valves,

a circuit for the magnet whichcontrols the door closing shifter, a manual circuit-maintaining switch for said closing circuit, a circuit for the magnet which controls the door opening shifter, a momentary closing switch for said last mentioned circuit, a branch from said last mentionedcircuit in cluding an emergency switch, and a battery shifting switch for the last mentioned'circuit controlled by the first mentioned circuit.
11. A 'door control system comprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, valve shifters controlling the respective valves, the one which controls-the opening valve shifter being capable of dominating the other, a circuit for the magnet which controls the door opening shifter, manual switches for the respective circuits, an emergency branch connected with the circuit which controls the door opening shifter, and a battery shifter for the last mentioned circuit controlled by the first mentioned circuit.
12. A door control systemcomprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, valve shifters controlling the respective valves, the one which controls the opening valve shifter being capable of dominating the other, a circuit for the magnet which controls the door opening shifter, manual switches for the [respective circuits, an
emergency branch connected with the cir- I cuit which controls the door opening shifter, a travelling emergency switch controlling said branch, and a battery connection for the opening circuit controlled by the closing circuit. ,4

A door control system comprising a door engine, reversing valves therefor, valve shifters controlling the respective valves, the one'which controls the opening valve shifter being capable of dominating the other, a cir-- cuit for the magnet which controls the door opening shifter, manual switches for the respective circuits, an emergencybranch connected with the circuit which controls the door opening shifter, contacts in the closing circuit, and means for separating said contacts when the door is closed. r
14. A door control system comprising a reversing door engine, reversing valves therefor, fluid operated valve shifters provided with cylinders of different "powers, the stronger cylinders controlling the door opening shifter, electro-magnetically operated valves controlling the respective cylinders,
manual switches for the circuits of said magnets and an emergency device controlling the circuit to the valve which controls the door opening shifter.
15. A door-control system comprising opposing fluid-pressure cylinders of difiierent power, the Weaker for door closing the stronger for door openlng, mztnually-operated contacts controlling the Weaker cylinder to close the door, and emergency means for 10 applying pressures in both cylinders simultaneously to-open the door.
