To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL. K. Pownas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
The-present invention relates to reels and its object is to provide an improved device of that character for the reeling therein of such resilient flat metal strips or ribbons as are employed in sewer-cleaning apparatus and the like.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the reel structure hereinafter particularly described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a reel and a resilient flat strip or ribbon reeled therein;
Figure 2 is a diametrical sectional view thereof taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a diametrical sectional enlarged view of parts of the same, taken on the same line;
Figure 1 is a diametrical sectional enlarged View of parts of the same, taken on line 44 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a side view of said parts.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated by the drawings, the reel comprises an annular member 1 made of a fiat metal strip bent into circular form and having its ends joined as by rivets 2. This annular member carries angularly-spaced pairs of fingers 3, 4 spaced apart in the annular members axial direction, these fingers extending inwardly toward the center or axis of the annular member, one finger 3 of each pair thus extending from one side 5 of said member and the other finger 4 of each pair extending from said members opposite side 6. In the construction illustrated, the fingers of each pair are formed by bending around the annular members outer surface, and then inwardly, the end portions 7 of cross bars 8 centrally connected as by a rivet 9, the body portions of these cross-bars thus forming the fingers 4 on the side 6 of the annular member, and the end portions of said bars forming the fingers 3 on said members opposite side 5. These cross bars are connected to the annular member as by rivets 10.
The resilient fiat meta-l strip or ribbon 11, such as is employed in sewer-cleaning apparatus and the like and carrying at its outer end a cleaning-head 12, is reeled in the reel in the following manner: Its inner end 13 is desirably heldagainst the inner surface of the annular member by suitable means, as

formed of a flat metal strip having a middle portion 15 outside and slidable along the annular member, and end portions 16 extending inwardly therefrom and on the opposite sides thereof, and carrying a screw bolt 17 passing through openings 18 in said end portions and provided with a holding nut 19. The inner end portion 13 of the ribbon 11 is held between this bolt and the inner surface of the annular member, as particularly seen in Figure 5, and between the opposite end portions 16 of said holding means. The ribbon 11 is now bent or coiled, lap upon lap, between the fingers 3 and 4:, the inner end 13 of said ribbon being frictionally held by the flexing thereof between the lfiolt 17 and the annular members inner surace.
It will be seen that the fingers 3 are shorter than, i. e., extend toward the axial center of the annular member not so far as, the fingers 4: on said members opposite side, so that as the reeling progresses the ribbon is coiled into the reel from the side 5 of the annular member and is positioned edgewise against the longer fingers 4, which in this case are the cross bars 8, and which act as stops holding the coiled ribbon against movement out of the reels opposite side.
It will also be seen that the ribbon may be only partially uncoiled, so that only a portion thereof may be used if desired.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described: an axially-open annular member having angularly-spaced pairs of axially-spaced inwardly-extending lingers.
2. In a device of the character described: an axially-open annular member having angularly-spaced pairs of axially-spaced inwardly-extending fingers, the fingers adjacent one side of Said member extending inwardly further than the fingers adjacent said members opposite side.
3. In a device of the character described: an axially-open annular member; angularlyspaced centrally-connected cross bars secured adjacent their ends to said member and extending from one side thereof; angularly-spaced fingers extending inwardly from said members opposite side.
4:. In a device of the character described: an annular member having inwardly-extending angularly-spaced pairs of fingers adapted to hold a resilient ribbon bet-ween them and inside said member; means car ried by said member extending inwardly therefrom for holdingly engaging said ribbon adjacent its end.
5. In a device of the character described: an annular member having inwardly-ere tending angularly-spaced pairs of fingers adapted to hold a resilient ribbon between them and inside said member; means slidably carried by said member and extending inwardly for holdingly engaging said rib bon adjacent its end.
6. In a device of the character described: an annular member having inwardly-ex tending angularly-spaced pairs of fingers adapted to hold a resilient ribbon between them and inside said member; means carried by said member having a middle portion outside thereof and end portions extending inwardly therefrom, and a bolt extending between the end portions adapted to holdingly engage an end of said ribbon between the bolt and the inner surface of said member.
