FAST NER ,ron STAKE earns.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, BEN B. Jo NsrroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fastener for Stake Gates, of which the'following is a specification.
The presentinvention relates to fasteners for stake gates and has for its principalobject to provide a fastener of this nature which will prevent the gates from jumping out of their sockets and strengthen the side and end gate construction.
Otherimportant objects of the invention are to provide a device of this nature which will allow the gates to be easily lifted out of their sockets when desired, which will maintain the gates secure in place when desired which will facilitate and provide for easily locking the stake gates in their proper places, and prevent them from being pushed out when two gates'are locked together.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this nature which may be interchangeably used either on the side or end gates.
A still further very important object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this nature which is simple in construction, efficient and reliable in use, inexpensive to manufacture. strong, durable, easy to manipulatc, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
[11 the drawing,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a stake gate structure showing one of my fas teners associated therewith,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.,
Fig. is an enlarged elevation of one of the leaves showing a portion thereof in section with the links associated therewith also shown in section, v
Fig. 4 is a detail section taken substant ally onthe line 4:T**4- Of 3,
Application filed March 13, 1925. .Serial VITO-11.51414.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of oneof the hinge pins,
Fig. '6 is a detail perspective of one of the links, and i g Fig. '7 is a longitudinal section through the fastener showing thel same positioned atacorner.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it
will'be seen that the numerals 5 designate the two hinge plates which .are adapt'edto be fixed to theTpanel boards of the stake gate in lanysuitaiblemanner. 'The adjacent edges of these plates 5 are provided with sleeve 6. Each sleeve 6 is in two sections separated byaslot 7. The lower SfiQtiono-f each sleeve 6 is provided with an inwarolly extending lug 8.
e1 pair of'links 9have their adjacent ends reduced'as at 10 and apertured asat 11', while their outer ends are apertured as at 12. The reduced ends .10 are placed one on top of the other as'is indicated toad-=1 vantage in Fig. 1, and a pin 13 pivots them together. The outer ends are placed in the slots 7 and the apertures 12 are in registry with the bores of the sleeve 6 and hinge pins 14 are inserted through the sleeves and apertures 12 for pivoting the links to the leaf plates 5.
As is shown to advantage in Figs. 3, at and 5, each hinge pin 14 is provided with a suitable head 15 in order. that the pin may be easily turned and removed when desired. vided with a longitudinally extending groove 16 communicating with an annular groove 17 disposed adjacent the lower end of the pin.
These grooves 16 and 17 form a kind of bayonet slot so that the pins may be inserted in the sleeves and through the aperture 12 so that the groove 16 receives the lug 8 and the pin is then pushed down until the lug is positioned in the annular groove 17 after which the pin is turned and thus is locked against accidental displacement.
It is thought that the construction of the ,able material may be used. It will be apparent from the above that this fastener enables the operator, as well as the builder,
The lower end of each pin is pro-' invention will now be clearly understood to stake the gates on any part of the truck body platform. The fastener may be used at the corners, the same as on the sides. Heretofore, fasteners in use must be placed at one exact place on the wagon or truck body by the builder and also by the operator, and cannot be used except in that place. The stake gates must always be. placed with the old fasteners at one precised place.
The present fastener enables or operator to place the stake gate on any part of the body platform and the parts of the fastener retain said stake gate in its place. In operation, the fastener permits the operator to work more rapidly in placing the stake gates in position. He is not compelled to take time to decide the exact place where each stake must be placed.
Under the old method, there had to be a different fastener at the corners from that on the sides. This present fastener may be used at the corners as well as at the sides and therefore can be manufactured in larger quantities and Consequently cheaper than the ordinary fastener. Y
The various parts of the device are easy to assemble and to disassemble and will prove strong and durable in use. It is apparent that the present embodiment of the invention which I have described in detail. attains all the features of advantage enum erated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and
the builder that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to With out departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is 1. A fastener of the class described including a pair of plates having their adja cent edges provided with sleeves, each sleeve being formed in a pair of alined sections separated by a slot, a pair of pivoted links having their ends apertured, and hinge pins adaptedto pass through the sleeves and the apertures of the links.
2. A. fastener of the class described including a pair of plates having their adjacent edges provided with sleeves, each sleeve being formed in a pair of alined sections separated by a slot, a pair of pivoted links having their ends apertured, hinge pins adapted to pass through the sleeves and the apertures of the links, the lower sections of the sleeves being provided with inwardly extending lugs, and said pins being provided with longitudinally extending slots starting from their lower ends and terminating intermediate their ends and annular grooves at the termination of the longitudinal grooves for receiving the lugs all. in the manner and for the purpose'specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
BEN B. JOHNSTON.
