MECHANICALLY-OPERATED FIGURE TOY.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'ro-N PoLioHnK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanically-Operated Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to toys, having more particular reference to a toy comprising a pair of moving figures representing blacksmiths working at an anvil, the invention being here embodied in a toy arranged for hand manipulation.
The present invention has for an object to provide a novel and interesting toy that may be cheaply manufactured- For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawing the improved toy comprises a pair of figures or mannikins 10 each formed to represent the body of a smith. These figures are positioned facing one another, being held in the given general relation by means of a pair of I parallelbars 11 and 12. These bars are arranged one above the other, in close adjacence to one another, and are straddled at their ends by the bifurcated lower ends 10 of the figures. The figures are attached to the bars 11 and 12 to permit of swinging with relation to the latter, by means of pins 14 that pass freely through the said bars and are fixed at their ends in the said bifurcated portions of the figures. The top bar 11 is formed midway between its ends with anupward projection 15 that constitutes the anvil. This bar is extended longitudinally behind and beyond one of the figures, in the form of a handle 11 while the other bar is similarly extended behind the other figure in the form of a handle 12.
Each figure carries a hammer comprising a head18 and a handle 19, the head being so positioned to strike the anvil when the hammer. is swung up and down., The handle ofe'ach hammer is preferably formed rigid with a pair'of arm extensions 20 from the respective figures, these arm extensions being fixedto shafts 21 pivoted in the shoulder portions of the figures. These shafts 21 have fixed thereto the short arms 22 that are located in recesses 23 that extend upward within the figures from the bifurcated lower ends of the latter. These arms have connected thereto the upper ends of the links 24 that extend downward through the recesses in the figures and through slotted apertures 25' in the bars 11 and 12 and are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the lower bar 12' as at 26 the points of connections of the links to the said bar being forwardly of the pins 14 that serve to pivotally connect the figures to the bars. The arms 22 may have also connected thereto the tension springs 28 that are attached to V the shoulder portion of the said figures.
I The-toy is used by grasping the handle elements 11 and 12 and moving the hands of. the user toward and away from one another, causing the bars 11 and 12 to move longitudinally upon one another. This longitudinal movement of the bars imparts a swinging movement to the figures, while in addition it causes the arms 20 to swing on the figures, moving the hammers 18 up and down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A toy comprising a pair of figures arranged in opposition to one another, and a pair of parallel bars to which said figures are pivotally attached, said bars being arranged one above the other, and said figures being bifurcatedto straddle the ends of the said bars, arms hinged to the said figures, hammers carried by the said arms, and operative connections between the said arms and one of the. said bars whereby the said arms are caused to swing on the figures when the said bars are moved longitudinally upon one der portions of the respective figures, arms fixed to said shafts, hammers carried by the said arms, a projecting arm on eachof said shafts Within the said figures, and links connecting the said last named arms with the one of said bars.
