Beit known that l, LEROY J. Btf'rronrlr, a c1tizen of the United States, andresident New'Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Color-Fade'-Testing Apparatus, of which. the following 1s a specification.`
.The lpresent invention relates to apparatus for subjecting colored articlesv to the. in-
' fluence of ultra violet light for the purpose of quickly predetermining, the life -of the colors under the influence of sunlight or. -other light or for comparing the lives of different colors. The apparatus of this in' vention is capable of general application in the testing of colors, dyes, paints, and so on of whatever nature and on whatever kind of material ap lied.
The object o this invention is to provide a source f light rich in ultra violet rays and in conjunction therewith means for drum showing a fused quartz mercury rvaporholding dyed or colored materials such as cloth, paper, etc., or painted articlesfor the purpose of exposing the appliedpaint, color oi' dye to said source of ultra violet light during the process of test fading the color.
In the drawin Fig. 1 shows an elevation view of a mu ti-paneled holding drum mounted on a standard andl a base on the latter of which is carried a casing holding apparatus auxiliary to the electric source of ultraviolet light.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view ofthe arclamp mounted'therein as the source of ultra violet li ht and also showing openings in the sides of the drum with colored fabrics exposed therethrough.

The-fused quartz mercuryvapor arc lamp,
l. which is used as al source of light rich 1n ultra violet rays is held to the cabinet frame member, 21, by means of bracket, 11, and the control rod, 10.' To the inner end of rod, 10, `is fixed the mounting.. 7, 'which holds the clips 5 and 6- which in turn receive the end caps of lamp l. -These yend caps being of metal serve` both as mounting members and as the electrical conductors between the electrodes of the lamp andthe clips 5 and 6. To the clips 5 and 6 is connected a suitable source of electric current. i
On lthe outer end of the control rod 10 is fixed the turning knob, 12, bv means of which the lamp is tilted for starting. On the rod 10 is .fixedly mounted the member, 14, which engages screw, 16. hvhich passes A notch in the memamount of rotation of rod 10 and therefore of lamp '1 can be adjustably determined by' the angle of said notch and the adjustment of screw 16. The springl 13 inserted between the cabinetframe, 21, the frame 14 serves to hold the lamp and its supporting members rigidly. Opposite frame 21 is a screw member. 17 which is connected across the top by means of braces 20 and at the bottom by braces 23. The head, 24, which is mounted on standard, 2 5, is fixed -to said braces 23 at'their midpoint. {These members, namely, 20, 21 and 23 form a frame I on each side of which are mounted shell casings 2 to form an enclosure for the lamp 1. Between the'members 20 at their midpoints is fixed a bridging-member 19 which serves to hold the baille plate 3 which shields v the light from the opening at the top of the lamp enclosure. thumb piece 18 saidbale 3 is adjustedin'its miv By means of screw 17 and relation to the opening at the top of the enl closure to allow 'a circulation of airthrough the enclosure. Near the bottom of the enclosure is the baille4 which is mounted on head 24 and par-ts 23. The edgesof thisbaille are turned u ward to forma baille` pam-the baille in sform serves to hold `out while at the same time it allows for the -circulation of air.
The shell casings 2 are formed with a plurality of plain faces or l panels whereby the assembled enclosure forms a polygonal shell. In these faces or panels are provided openings 26 which serve for the )assage of light to articles being tested. ver these openings 26 are fixed the baffle shells 22 closed at the sides and open at their tops and bottoms. Over these openings are held the sample :trames 27 havingl grill openings in them to register with the opening 26 over which they are respectively mounted, said frames 27 being held on the baflies 'by means of pin's28. The samples to be tested are held on the sample frames 27 by means of plates 28 which are braced against the sample andframe 27 by means of springs 29 which are fixed to frames 27. These frames with their mounted samples are insertable through-the top and bottom ends of baflles 22. C
In' the use of my apparatus 'I mount a sample of 'colored cloth, for instance between a baille plate 27 anda plate ,28 and insert the sample within one end of one of the battles 22 and keep it there exposed to light from the source l for thedesired period of time. Within the capacity of my apparatus can be tested at once for instance a comparative test. Or between openings the enclosure can be used for exposingsamples for individual or separatetests. For comparative time test-"of the dye of a piece of cloth I insert part of a sample' piece between the holder `27 and its plate 28 exposing itvonlythrough one of the openings 30. After sub'ecting it to the light for a given length o time I move the piece so as to register the exposed areato another of the openings30 and to expose a new area. Then by exposing again for a given length of time I secure fading results for different given lengths of time on the same piece.. L
The lamp casing is rotatably movable on the standard,i25, which fits into the head 24, which is fixed to the bottom of the lamp Any number of plates' vertical fra-me fixed to said standard, a balefpan fixed to said standard and within said frame, an adjustable bal'lle fixed to said frame 'opposite said baille-pan, andshellcasing frame members23, the movement in either direction being controlled by lstop pin 31.
I claim as myinvention:
l. In combination a source of light rich i top and bottom. and removable sample 7l' frames .Within thel lastsaid bailes, said sample frames having openings registering with the olppnings in the shell member.
' 2. color fading apparatus, a source of light, a frame member about saidflight, parallel/shell members removablyl mounted one .on eacliv side of said frame to. form an enclosure about said light source, an opening at the'top of said enclosure andone 4at the bottom thereof, an adjustable baille across said upper opening, a baille across said bot,- tom openin having its edges turned upwardly to orm a pan, openings in 'said panel, lightl shields over said openings, and sample holding frames detachably mounted between said'shields and openings.
