Be it known that I, Louis V. ARONSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sparklers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to toys and has as an object the provision of a toy having provision for giving an illumination by means of colored light which changes color while in operation. A further object of the invention is the provision of a toy having a revoluble momentum disk carrying one or more revoluble disks made up of portions of different color with means to provide an illumination which may show through the colored portion of the last named disks.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of the invention wherein,

As shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the device comprises a handle 10, preferably tubular in form, and a frame mounted thereon comprising a disk 11 having a projection 12 from one side thereof turned at right angles toprovide the portion 13 to which the handle 10 may be secured, as in the manner shown in Figure 3. As there shown an opening 14 is formed in the portion 13, an end of the handle 10 is passed through the opening and upset as at 15.
The continuation of the projection 12 beyond the part 13 is shown as turned to a position of parallelism with the part 12 at 16 and continued through the off set portion 17 the portion 18 broughtback to the plane of the portion 16, and the end of the strip is bent to form the portion 19 which may be secured to the disk 11 in any desirable manner.
A revoluble momentum member is shown in the form of a disk 20 of some heavy material as iron or steel. Mounted upon the disk 20 there is shown a plurality of disks as 21, 22. The latter named disks are desirably formed of translucent colored material as celluloid and preferably a plurality of colors are utilized, two colors being shown in the form of the device of Figures 1 to 3 inclusive. As indicated in Figure 2 the disks 21, 22 are warped out of the plane Means to provide an illumination behind the disks 21, 22 are provided in the form of a sparking mechanism. In the 'form of the invention illustrated, a zone or annular strip of abradant material as sand or emery paper is shown at 23 mounted upon the disk 11. To produce sparks when the member 20 is revolved, pieces of pyrophoric material 24.
.are shown mounted in sockets 25 carried by and projecting through the disk 20. To ress the pyrophoric elements against the abra-dant material there is shown a spring at 26 supported by passing about the shaft 27 and having its ends working in slots 28 in the sockets 25 and pressing upon the elements 24 as shown.
The sockets 25 are utilized for mounting of the disks 21 and 22 for free revolution upon the disk 20. The disks 21, 22 being retained upon the sockets 25 by the presence of the spring 26.
To cause revolution of the disk 20 the shaft 27 upon which it is mounted and which is journaled in the disk 11 and in the portion 18 of the frame, for free revolution, is provided with a gear 29 in mesh with a second gear wheel 30 mounted upon a shaft 31 journaled in the disk 11 and in the portion 17 of the frame. Mounted rigidly upon the gear 30 there is shown a ratchet wheel 32. To drive the ratchet Wheel 32 there is shown a pair of pawls 33 carried by a drum 34 mounted upon the shaft 31 for a free revolution.
To drive the drum 34 a flexible element 35 is shown having an end secured to the drum and being coiled thereon. To rewind the element 35 upon the drum after it has been unwound in the operation of the device; a coil spring 36 is shown having an end 37 anchored to the frame and its opposite end 38 anchored to the drum 34. To prevent the element from being withdrawn completely into the handle 10, a ball is shown secured upon the end thereof.
To all-ow the sparks produced by the frie tion of the pyrophoric elements against the abradant material 23 to show through the disks 21, 22, the periphery of the disk 20 is cut away as shown at 41, 42 to provide recesses in the rear of the position of the pyrophoric elements. It will be understood that other means for producing illumination might be substituted for that shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 4 the frame comprises a horizontal portion 43 mounted upon the handle 10' and having an upright 44 for supporting one end of the shaft 31 and also a second upright 45 for supporting the remaining end of the shaft 31 and also for supporting of the disk 11. The upright 45 is preferably formed as an angle to increase its rigidity. The momentum member 20 in this form of the invention is monuted upon a shaft 27' one end of which is journaled in the disk 11 and the other end in a bracket 46 which may be struck out from the material of the handle 45. To drive the momentum member the-gear 47 is rigidly mounted upon the shaft 27" and a driving gear 48, shown as provided with teeth projecting at an angle of 45 from its plane, is mounted upon the shaft 31, and may be driven by the drum 34 in the same manner as the form of the device illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising, in combination, a revoluble momentum member, revoluble translucent disks mounted thereon having portions of different colors, means to cause illumination behind said disks upon revolution of said momentum member and means to revolve said momentum member.
2. A toy comprising, in combination, a revoluble momentum member, translucent disks carried thereby for free rotation, said momentum member having recesses in its edge adjacent each translucent disk, portions of said translucent disks differing in color and means to cause illumination to show through said recesses and said translucent disks.
3. A toy comprising, in combination, a revoluble member, a translucent disk having portions of different colors mounted upon said revoluble member for free rotation, unbalanced portions of said disk projecting from the general plane of the disk whereby, upon revolution of the member, the disk will be caused to revolve upon its axis, means to cause illumination behind said disk upon actuation of the revoluble member and means to cause said actuation.
4. A toy comprising, in combination, a frame, a disk mounted on said frame, carrying a ring of abradant material, a revoluble member mounted on said frame, a pyrophoric element carried by said member in contact with said abradent material, a revoluble translucent disk bearing portions of difiering colors carried by said member in such a position that sparks from the pyrophoric material may illuminate the coloredv portion and means for causing revolution of said member.
5. In a toy, in combination, a frame comprising a disk, a strip of material projecting from said disk and bent to provide a portion at an agle thereto, a portion substantially parallel to said disk and a portion substantially parallel to said first named portion, the end of the last named portion attached to said disk, a handle attached to the first named portion, a shaft journaled in said second named portion and projecting through the center of said disk, a momentum member secured upon said shaft, coacting means carried by said member and disk to produce illumination when said member is revolved, a second shaft journaled in said frame parallel with said first named shaft and having driving connection therewith and means to drive said second named shaft.
