IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.

Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 155,759, dated October 6, 1874; application filed i August 6, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, FRIEDRICH WILHELM SCHULTZ, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. l

The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar mode of constructing the scraperframe, and hanging the scraper box or body in the same, as will be hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my scraper, and Fig. 2 a side view of same.

In the figures, A represents a scraper box or body,fwhich is constructed in any of the Well-known and usual ways. B B represent two metallic bars, which are pivoted at their front ends to the forward end of the scraperbox. A short distance in rear ot' the point where they are pivoted arms are formed upon these bars, and said arms provided with the wheels Gr Gr, which serve to carry the scraperbox. The same bolt or pivot which connects the bars B B to the scraper-box also connects two bars, D, which pass forward, and are bolted to a tongue, E. Before reaching the tongue, however, they are separated, braced, and held apart by means of the cross-bar F. The two bars B B are connected at their rear ends by -means of a rod, C, and Jthis rod is caught or freed by means of a spring-catch, a, connected ,to the rear of the scraper-box.

By this arrangement it will be seen that the forward end of the scraper-box is supported by means of the wheels G G, and that while at work, and being partially loaded, or entirely so, it will not drag heavily upon the earth.

The heavy friction with the ground is avoided, and the entire load is transferred to a rolling friction, being borne by the wheels.

When it is necessary to discharge the load, the rod C is relieved from the catch a. The box then tumbles, as in the ordinary scraper, and turning 11p-side down, as seen in Fig. 2, isv again carried upon the wheels back to its work again.

It will bevseen that the crank formed by the point at which the arm B is pivoted, and where the arm receives the wheel, allows the wheel to rise, and the box to drop, so that it is easily upset.

By my construct-ion of parts the scraper-box with its handles, the curved arms, connecting cross-bar C, and wheels canbe thrown forward up-side down directly above the tongue and bars D D, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when not in operation the scraper rest-s upon the tongue in a small compass.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the tongue E, cross-bar F, and bars D D, connected to the tongue, and pivoted to the `front ends of the sides of the box A, the frame B B C, pivoted to the ends of the bars D, and carrying the wheels G G, so that the scraper box and frame B C may be folded forward, and lie up-side down upon the tongue and bars D, all asset forth.
