MOTOR FUEL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN LA Rlnorsinnn. a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor Fuels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuels, for in ternal combustion engines. More specifically my invention relates to the prevention of engine knock, and to the provision of a fuel which is economically efficient and will admirably remove that which is commonly formed by addlng to liquid hydrocarbons,
aniline or its derivatives and a blending agent, preferably ether. Such a fuel has been found to possess remarkable anti-knock qualities. In its preferred form my invention is directed to a motor fuel in which aniline itself is used or a derivative'thereof is employed, in conjunction with a blending agent.
The substituted anilines which have proven most satisfactory are alkyl and phenyl substituted anilines such as the ethyl anilines, the methyl anilines,-the diphenyl amines and derivatives thereof. My experiments show that the'best anti-knoek motor fuel is obtained by using aniline mixed with a relatively small proportion of a blending agent such as other or acetone.
The most satisfactory means of measuring the anti-knock ualities of a motor fuel is the well known ,idgely bouncing pin apparatus, wherein the volume of gasgem erated in the apparatus is a measure of the detonation effect. The less the volume of gasgenerated, the greater the anti-knock effect of the fuel.
The following data using the fuel mix-- tures set forth were obtained by using the Midgely bouncing pin apparatus. The

experiments upon which the following re sults are based were made on the same day .using the same apparatus on each mixture and the gasoline used in each mixture was of ldentlcal quality coming from a single container.
Fuel mixture used. Volume (0. 0.) generated. 1. Straight gasoline 2.9 2. Gasoline benzol 50% 0. 3. Straight gasoline plus 1% aniline 1.4 4. Straight gasoline plus 71 other- 2. 4 5. Straight gasoline plus 1% aniline and ether 0. 8 6. Straight gasoline plus 1 aniline and 70 other 0.55 7. Straight gasoline plus 2% aniline and other 0.35 8. Straight gasoline plus 3% aniline and 4% ether 0.25
In the above mixture, acetone may be substituted for the ether and similar results to those specified above will be obtained.
Upon reviewing the above data it will be seen that ether alone has practically no effect on the anti-knock qualities of the motor fuel. Aniline alone in small quantities has some effect on the anti-knock qualities of the fuel but in general the anti-- knock qualities of the fuel is unsatisfactory. It is only when the blending agent is used in conjunction with aniline or its de- :rivatives, that a real anti-knock effect is obtained. The fuel mixture 1%. 6 above gives an anti-knock value equivalent to a 50% gasoline and a 50% benzol mixture.
Instead of gasoline, hydrogenated hydrocarbons or hydrogenated naphthols and naphthenes may be employed. Benzols may also be employed. In a high compression motor having a comprtssion ratio in the neighborhood of one to twelve, and a compression in the neighborhood of 500 pounds a motor fuel composed of benzol with approximately 3% aniline and 1 to l of blending agent, such as ether, has proved.
peculiarly effective. To this mixture, gasoline may be added to alter the B. t. u. value of the fuel.
The blending agent employed may be members of the class of others or ketone such as dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, etc, and the ketones may be dimethyl ketone, dlethyl 'ketoues, ethyl methyl, ketones or other members of this class.

The above disclosure is merely illustrative of my invention.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A motor fuel comprising a hydrocar- 5 bon, aniline and an ether.

4. A motor fuel comprisin a hydrocarhon, aniline and ether, the latter two in quantity sufiicient to give to the motor fuel anti-knock characteristics comparable to a 50% benzol 50% gasoline mixture. 7
