IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,552, dated September 29, 1874 application filed April 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. B. SWEETLAND Of Pontiac, in'the county of Oakland and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick and Mortar Elevator; and do-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to elevators in which a platform is raised and lowered by means of a Windlass and ropes or chains; and consists of the adjustability of the removable guides for the platform and the combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a section of one device for fastening the wire guides. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 4 is a section or a perspective of a portion of the elevating-platform, and Fig. 5 is a view of the clamp for lower end of wire guide.
In the drawings, A A A represent a frame, which contains the hoisting apparatus, and which is made in size and strength according to the work which it is intended to perform. B, B, and E represent a windlassframe and its braces. This frame is made in a substantial manner and firmly braced, and then bolted to the bottom of the main frame A A A. G represent the hoisting-platform, which, it will be seen, is strongly staid by the braces H H. The platform G is raised and lowered by means of a suitable rope or cord, F," one end of which is secured to it, and the other to the Windlass L. It passes over pulleys K K. To one end of the Windlass-shaft is secured a gear-wheel, G. A shaft passes across the Windlass-frame above the Windlass-shaft, on the outer-end of which is a pinion or small gear-wheel, D. On this same shaft, and embracing the pinion,is a metal loop, which drops down between the teeth of the gear-wheel G,
and acts as a pawl or detent. This loop may be turned over the pinion, so that it will catch into the teeth of the wheel 0 on either side; I I represent two wire cords, which act as guides for the platform. These wires pass through the bottom of the main frame and into a metallic block, J, where they are clamped, as seen in Fig. 5, or in any other manner, by set-screw or otherwise. d represents a metallic sleeve, and 0 represents a metallic socket. The sleeve passes intothe socket, and is there confined by means of a pin, which passes through both from side to side. The wire guide passes into the sleeve (1, and has a loop in its end, which is caught over the pin just mentioned. On the upper end of the socket e is formed a screw bolt, 43, which passes through the outer end of an arm, P, which is bolted upon the crossbeam A of the main frame. By means of the threaded bolt i the wire chains may be tightened or loosened, or removed. These guides pass through suitable openings made for them in the top and bottom cross-ties of the elevating-platform, so that said platform, when it is raised and lowered, is held and guided in such a manner that it always works smoothly and evenly.
It will readily be seen that brick, or stone, or mortar, or other building material, can be raised with ease and facility to any required height, and that the platform may, by means of the link-pawl, be stationed at any desired point.
The windlass L is grooved, as represented, so that the cord F will always wind evenly around, the grooves being spirally formed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the wire guides I I, of the sockets e and sleeves (1, connected by a cross-pin and the screw-bolts i, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the platform G G, the adjustable and removable guides I 1, blocks J, sockets e. sleeves (l, and the adjusting screw-bolts i, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
