l.. D. LONG PORTABLE OIL DRAIN 'PAN Filed March 16, 1925 my. j.
ATTORNEYS shape having its Patented Sept. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES LEONARD D. LONG, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
PORTABLE OIL-DRAIN PAN.
Application led March 16, 1925. Serial No. 16,078.
To aZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEONARD D. LONG, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poi-,table Oil-Drain Pans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable drain pans and has for its object the provision of a device which may be readily transported from place to place to receive the spent oil from crank cases so that it will'not be necessary for the owner of a car to drlve the same to a garage or other place for the purpose of removing the oil.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be readily and easily placed beneath the crank case of a car to receive the spent oil of the crank case, the device being equipped with a funnel for directing the oil to the tank and a bale adjacentthe funnel to prevent splashing ocf1 the oil when the tank is being transorte l P This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawing forming a part of the speciication; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is notconned to the disclosure, being susceptible 'of such changesand modifications which shall de-` line no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the portable tank.
Figure 2 is 'a plan View of the same.
Figure 3 is a rear end view of the tank.
Figure 4 is a fragmentaryvertical section showing a detail of the frame and rollers.
Referringmore particularly to the drawings, the tank consists of a container 1 shown as rectangular and preferably an oblong in front portion 2 covered with a flat top as 3. The rear half portion of the container has a depressed cover delining a funnel 5 and' is secured in any approved manner to the upper edges of the rear end wall and of the side walls beyond said cover 3. The apex of the funnel which is eccentrically disposed with respect to the top ofthe container has an opening 6 to .portion ofthe frame to direct the spent oil interior of the tank.
A screen 7 is secured across the opening through'which the oil is poured to remove foreign particles and act as a guard to prevent tools from falling into the tank.
A baiiie comprising a plurality of plates 8 is secured at the apex of the funnel and depends below opening 6 and wholly surrounds said opening to prevent splashing of the oil when the tank is conveyed from one place to another. The baffle terminates above the base of the tank to permit the oil to How to all parts of the tank and to be drained from said tank when a cap or plug 9 is removed from the drain pipe 10V located at the rear of said container at substantially the level of the bottom thereof, the pipe 10` being seated in an opening in the rear cross bar of the frame. The baille is preferably of a crank case to the be of any configuration desired.
The container is removablyV supported on a frame generally designated by the numeral 11 and made of The side bars 12 and the front and rear end bars'13 forming the frame are secured together in any approved manner, or they may be made in a single bar and then bent to shape.
The `forward end of the frame has projecting ears 17 between which is pivoted a tongue 18 having a hand grip 19, the tongue being of material length whereby the container can be readily shoved under the car either from the front or side to properly position it beneath the crank case, and to otherwisey manipulatethe device.
Two rollers or casters are located at the rear of said tank and preferably a single roller or caster is positioned below that which is' adjacent brackets 15 which the tongue 18.
I claim 1. A portable oil container consisting of an oblong covered pan having portions of the cover sloping inwardly to den nel, an opening at the apex of said funnel eccentrically disposed in said cover, a plurality of plates depending from the cover angle iron construction. 4
rectangular in cross section but ea funand wholly surrounding the epex openin roller truck` frame, and a` draft `tongue 'of and constltuting bales therefor, the .sai material length at one end of said truck 10 lates terminating above and free from the frame. ottom of the pan, a retioulated guard plate 2. device as set yforth in claim 1, the 5 in the apex opening, afdrain plug. inserted angle lron frame having an o ening in one in one end of the :pan at substantially the 8I1d fdpted t0 receive the rain plug to level of the bottom thereof, said container addltlonauy aIlChOI the pan in the frame. removably mounted within an' angle'ron LEONARD D. LONG.
