Description
l. K. HU'NT. Washing-Machine's.
Patented Sept. 29,1874.
INVENTOR WITNESSES QM Wm fwe @Wm, BY W ATTORN EYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH K. HUNT, OF BALDWIN, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155.446, dated September 29, 1874; application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSIAH K. HUNT, of Baldwin, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a sectional view of my washing-machine, and Fig.2 is a plan view.
This invention has relation to machines for cleansing fabrics by passing them between rollers arranged on top of a wash-tub; and the novelty consists in the detachable washing-machine hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
I11 the annexed drawings, A designates an ordinary wash-tub, on which is removably secured a rectangular frame consisting of longitudinal bars B B and transverse bars 0 U, rigidly secured together. E designates a corrugat-ed roller, the corrugations of which extend from one end of it to the other. This roller is secured on a shaft, F, which has its end bearings in the side bars B B, and is provided with a hand-crank, G. D D designate two rollers, which are also corrugated, and which are of less diameter than the roller E. The corrugations in these rollers are larger and farther apart than those of the roller E, so that during the passage of the fabrics back and forward between the rollers the corrugations will operate to a much better advantage than if they were uniformly disposed on all of the rollers. The twin rollers D D have their end bearings in journal boxes or eyes 8, formed'on the free extremities of springs S, which springs are secured by bolts to the side bars B B. These springs S will keep the rollers D D down upon the fabrics, and allow the rollers to yield independently of each other, and accommodate themselves to varying thicknesses of fabrics. At the end of the three rollers E D D are thin metal guards J J, through which the roller-shafts pass freely, which guards will prevent the fabrics from running off the ends of the rollers, and also prevent water from being forced OK at these points.
1 am well aware a washing-machine having grooved rollers mounted inarms hinged independently of each other, as shown in Letters Patent No. 77,252, dated April 28, 1868, are not new, and therefore I do not claim such invention, broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The detachable washing-machine, consisting of the rectangular frame, the corrugated rollers D D and E, and the springs s s, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH K. HUNT.
