Description

A. M.. WHIPPLE. FasteningsforDarr iage Bows. No.155 354, Patented Sept.22,1874.
THE GFAPHICCO, PHOTO '-LITH.39& 41 PARK FLA CE,N.Y,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AROHIBALD M. WHIPPLE, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR CARRIAGE-BOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,354, dated September 22, .874 application filed March 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD M. WHIP- PLE, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Fastening for Carriage-Bows; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in a bolt or rivet provided with an ornamental capped head for fastening a carriage-bow to the bow-iron by the capped head fitting over the end of the bow,as will be hereinafter more fully set forth In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of a part of a carriagebow and bow-iron embodying my invention.
A represents the end of a carriage-bow, and B the bow-iron, secured thereto by screws on or other suitable means. The lower end of the bow A is fastened to the iron B by the following means: 0 is a bolt or rivet, provided on one end with a head, D, made in the form of a cap, which may be ornamented in any desired manner. The bolt or rivet O is passed through a hole in the bow-iron immediately at the end of the bow, and the cap or head 1) fits over the end of the bow, forming a simple, yet neat and tasteful, finish for the same.
Heretofore sockets have generally been used to form the finish at the lower end of the carriage-bow; but in using such sockets it is necessary to have the bow-irons made especially for them, as the bow-irons have to pass through them; and to do this they must be made smaller than those now in market. The sockets cannot be enlarged, as the extra size required to admit of the irons passing through would make them so large and bungling in appearance that they would be totally unfit for the purpose designed. Again, the difficulty in casting the socket and the labor in finishing them up inside and out are so great as to make them too expensive to come into general use.
These difficulties are entirely overcome by casting the bolt or rivet O with the ornamental capped head D. They can beused with any iron now in the market, and can also be used on carriages now running, which will be a great convenience, as they are continually giving out at that point.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bolt 0, provided with the capped head D, in combination with the bow A and bowiron B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1874.
AROHIBALD M. WHIPPLE.
