IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 155,329, dated September 22, 1874; application filed August 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. MILNER, of Griffin, in the county of Spalding and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton- Presses and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of cottonpresses in which the bale-box is hung upon pivots in a frame mounted upon wheels, so as to be turned upward for filling, and in a horizontal position for pressing; and it consists in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my press, showing the same in position to be filled. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing it in the position for pressing.

A represents the press box or bale-box, framed in a strong and durable frame, B, which is pivoted to two upright bars, (J-one on each side. The bars 0 U are each held upon two parallel rods, to a, which connect a headpiece, D, and foot-piece D. These head and foot pieces are secured on suitable axles I) I), having wheels E E on their ends, thus forming a truck for conveying the press to any place desired, and drawing it over the field, for pressing the bales without the trouble of taking the cotton in its loose state from the field. The bale-box, turning upon pivots, is intended to be in a vertical position while being filled, and as soon as filled it is turned in a horizontal position for pressing. The lower part of the bale-box is provided with side doors H and end doors I, which are hinged at their inner or upper ends, and when closed are fastened by means of rods d d having hooks on both ends. On the inner side of the footpiece D are secured wedges f, against which the bottom of the bale-box bears when turned in a horizontal position. In the head-piece D is inserted a horizontal sleeve, h, having interior or female screw-threads, and two exterior circumferential grooves. Plates t i on each side of the head-piece D enter the grooves on the sleeve h, and hold the same firmly in place, so as to prevent any side or end motion thereof, while they form bearings in which the sleeve or nut can revolve freely. On the outer end of the sleeve or nut h is secured a wheel, J by means of which it is turned. G is a screw passing through the nut h, and its inner end secured to the follower K in the bale-box.

The operation of the machine is as follows: It being driven to the place where desired, the bale-box is turned in a vertical position, the follower K being first entirely withdrawn from the box. The box is now filled with cotton, after which the box is turned to a horizontal direction, and the follower forced into the same by turning the wheel J, thus pressing the bale. When the bale is pressed the doors H and I are opened, the bands tied, and the bale removed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a truck-frame, provided with stationary wedges ff at one end, and the Wheel J, grooved nut h, plates z i, and screw and follower G K at the other end, with the pivoted bale-box A B, provided with doors, all substantially as set forth.
