UNITED STATES JOHN ROBERT WATTS, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
sorssoas SHARPENER.
Application filed November 30, 1923. Serial No. 677,760.
T 0 all 10 ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RoBnRrWATrs, trading as John Watts, Lambert Works, Lambert Street, Sheffield, England, cutlery manufacturer, and a British subject, have invented a new and Improved Scissors Sharpener, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a sharpening device and has particular reference to a device for sharpening scissors.
The outstanding object ofthe present invention is to provide means for facilitating the sharpening or re-sharpening of the blades of a pair of scissors which insures the proper relation of the blades to the sharpening element whereby the sharpening operation may be accomplished by persons totally unskilled or unfamiliar therewith.
As a further object the invention contemplates a sharpening "device of the character set forth which is strong, durable and simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is thoroughly reliable and highly efficient in its purpose.
The invention still further contemplates a.- sharpening device including a guide means for properly associating the scissors blades with the sharpening element and in which the said sharpening element is movable to dispose a new surface in the presence of the blades in order to insure even wear on the sharpening edge thereof.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein.
to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is'a perspective view illustrating the device in use.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view thereof.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the device includes a base 10 preferably provided with a felt bottom lining 11. A strip of material bent in inverted U-shaped form to provide spaced parallel walls 12 and 13 connected by a bight 14 at its upper end projects upwardly from the base. The lower end of the wall 12 is formed with a plurality of anchoring lugs 15 which are anchored in the upper surface of the base. The opposite wall 13 is provided with an inverted lateral U-shaped extension 16 which embraces the parallel superposed ends 17 of a handle 18. Fastening screws 19 are passed through the aligned openings in the ends '17 and the U-shaped extension 16, said fastening screws being anchored in the base 10. A sharpening element 20 preferably consisting of a disk of carborunduin or any other suitable material is secured on a shaft 21 journaled in the walls 12 and 13 for rotation. One end of the shaft is provided with a knurled manipulating knob 22 for effecting rotation of the shaft and sharpening element, while the opposite end is provided with a reduced portion 23 which is upset over a washer 24 whereby the shaft is retained in place. In order to prevent accidental rotation of the shaft and sharpening element, a pair of spring elements 25 having radially projecting arms 26 and which are centrally apertured to receive the shaft 21 are interposed between the walls 12 and 13 and the opposite faces of the sharpening element. bight portion of the inverted U-shaped strip is slotted downwardly and inwardly at an angle as at 27 so that said slot intersects the path of movement of the periphery of the sharpening element 20 and provides means for positioning and guiding the blades B of the scissors S during the sharpening operation.
In use and operation the user grasps the handle 18 in the left hand for holding the base 10 in a steady position on its support ing surface. The scissors with the blades in opened position are grasped as illus trated in Fig. 1 and one of the blades is inserted in the slot 27 until the cutting edge engages with that portion of the periphery of the sharpening element 20 which registers therewith. By exerting a pressure on the blade and drawing the same back and forth across the periphery, the cutting edge of the blade will be sharpened at the appropriate angle. In order to insure even wear on the periphery of the sharpening element, the knurled knob 22 is manipulated to present a new surface within the slot 27 after each sharpening operation.
I claim:
The
A scissors sharpener comprising a base, a strip of material bent into an inverted U-shape mounted on said base and provided strip With the path of movement of the periphery thereof intersected by the slot, means extending exteriorly of the U-shaped 10 strip and connected With the sharpening element for rotating the same, ahandle memher having an angularly disposed terminal and a lateral inverted U-shaped extension from one of the Walls of the U-shaped strip overlying the angular bent terminal of the handle, and fastening elements extending through said extension and the handle terminal and anchored in the base.
