Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-DETACHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,317, dated September 22, 1874; application filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Detaching Horses from Single-Trees; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for det-aching horses from vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective of one end of .a
single-tree or whiflletree with lny device at- Fig. 2 is a side view of the yplaced from underneath upon the headed pin by said pin entering the slot a, the rubber b will be around the bottom and sides of the pin, and prevent rattling. The bar C is held upon the pin B by means of a key, d, inserted through a longitudinal hole or passage, fb', in the upper edge of the bar.
The key may be made of leather or of doubled spring-wire, or of any other suitable material; but I prefer to use leather, as in pulling the key out it will often be done at an angle.
The key d is held from coming out accidentally by the ends of the rubber b extending up a trifle above the bottom of the passage i on each side of the slot a, so as to exert a sufficient amount of friction on the key.
On the outer side of the bar G, near the front end, projects a headed pin, D, upon which the trace E is placed in the same manner as it is placed upon the whiffletree-pin B when my attachment is not used.
The keys d are, by straps, to be connected with a center strap passing into the vehicle, so as to be handy for the driver. If, for any cause, it should be desired to quickly detach the horse, it is only necessary to pull this strap, when the keys el d will be drawn out, and the bars C U drop down from the whifiietree-pins B B.
This device may also be used, for general convenience, for quickly detaching horses from vehicles of any kind.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`- l. The bar (l, provided with the slot a, passage z', and headed pin D, combined substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. rlhe combination, with whiflletreeA,hav ing headed pins B at its ends, of the bars C, provided with slots a, passages i, and headed pins D, and the keys d, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the fbregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this lst day of January, 1874.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
