- WASHING MACHINE.
To all whom it-may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Aos'rm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' The present invention aims to provide a 1 washing machine wherein the clothes may not only be thoroughly washed and cleansed but also rinsed with clear water and blue water and wrung out while in the machine and without the necessity of any handling of the clothes to eifect these operations.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a machine of this character and having these advantages and which is of sim 1e and durable construction, reliable and e cient in operation and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and operate.
Other objects and advantages reside in .certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which- V Figure 1 is a view in side elevationshowin% one embodiment of the invention,

The shaft 29 is journaled in suitable bearings provided therefor on the frames or stands 2 and on the ends of the shaft 29 which project beyond the frames or stands two crank disks '33 are fixed. The crank disks 33 have pins 34 and 35 fixed thereto the pin 34 of the one crank disk being of opposite throw with respect to the pin 35 of the other disk. Connectin rods 37 and 38 are connected to the cran pins 34 and 35 respectively. The connecting rod 37 is connected by means of a 5 ring connecting element 39 with the shaflt 11 while the connecting rod 8 is connected by a similar though oppo'si 1y arranged spring connecting element 40 to the drum 4. The spring connecting elements 39 and 40 provide yieldable or elastic connections in the mot-ion transmission means between the driving element or drive shaft 29 and the drum 4 and shaft 11.
In operation the clothes are placed in the drum 4 between the plates 15 and the plates 20, there being clothes on both sides of the machine. When the lever 32 is shifted to engage the members of the clutch the drum 4 and' the shaft 11 are oscillated in opposite directions so that the clothes are carried through the cleansing fluid which artially fills the tank 1 and the drum 4. lhe plates 15 being perforated permit the cleansing fluid to course through the clothes. As either set of the coacting plates 15 and 20 approach each other they squeeze the clothes between them and ex ress the cleansing fluid from the clothes, t 'erebg more effectively washing and cleaning t e same.
After the clothes have been thoroughly washed, the cleansing fluid is withdrawn through a valve controlled outlet 50 provided in the lower portion of the tank 1. The cleansing fluid is re laced by clear rinsing water or fluid and the rinsing water or fluid is in turn replaced by blueing water or the like if blueing is desirable. After these several operations have been com leted the valve controlled outlet is opene and thereafter the drum and the shaft are 0scillated for a, time so that the plates 15- and 20 will work to the end of wringing the clothes dry. Inthis way the same in-- strumentalities of the machine perform all of the operations neoessaryto the washing of the clothes and it is not necessary to handle the clothes to perform any of these operations. When the clothes are taken from the machine they are ready to be hun upon a line or otherwise dried.

I claim:
1. In a washing machine, a tank, an oscillating drum within the tank, an inde-.
pendently oscillatable shaft entending through the drum, a plate connected to the shaft and movable therewith, and a plate connected with the drum and movable therewith, -at least one of said plates being formed with openin s, and means for movequally well with various batches ing the drum and t e shaft in opposite 'di-jrections.
2. In a washing machine, a tank, anoscillating drum within the tank, an independently oscillatable shaft entending through the drum, a plate'connected to the shaft and movable therewith, and a plate connected with the drum and movable there with, at least one of said plates being formed with openings, and means for'moving the drum and the shaft in opposite directions, said means including a driving element and motion a transmission means between the driving element and the shaft and between the driving element and the drum, said motion transmission means including elastic elements.
3. In a washing machine, a tank, an oscillating drum within the tank, an independently oscillatable shaft entending through the drum, 9. plate connected to the shaft and movable therewith, a plate connected to the drum and movable therewith,
at.least "one of said plates being formed with openings, and means for moving the drum and the shaft in opposite directions and including a rotatable drive shaft, crank disks fixed to said'drive shafts and having crank pins, the pin of one crank being opposite to the pin of the other, connecting rods pivoted to the crank pins and elastic connectingelements between the rods and I the shaft and drum.
4. In awashingmachine, a tank, an oscillating drum within the tank, an independently oscillatable shaft entending through the drum, a plate connected to the shaft and movable therewith, a plate connected to the drum and movable therewith, at least one of said plates being formed with openings, and means for moving the drum and the shaft in opposite directions and including a rotatable drive shaft, crank disks fixed to said drive shaft andhaving crank pins, the pin of one crank being opposite to the in of the other, connecting rods pivoted to e crank and spiral springs tween the rods an the shaft and drum.
5. In a washing machine, a tank, an os- I' cillating drum within the tank, said drum being cylindrical and having perforations in itsperiphe an independently oscillatable shaft exten ing axi y through the drum,
