UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIBERATO MARTELLI, OFJERSEY CI new JERSEY.
Application filed April 2s, 1925. Serial No. 26,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIBERATO MARTELLI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie Plates and Rail Joints for Railroad Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to means for holding railroad rails on the ties and also join ing the meeting ends of railroad rails and has for its object the provision of a device of the character stated consisting of two parts, one of which is slidably mounted on the other, each of said parts provided with a. jaw to engage the base and web of the rai road rail, the jaw members having elongated portions that enclose the webs of abutting rails at the joints to lock the rails together. The two parts are also provided with openings adjacent their ends that aline with one another when the parts are in position holding the rail, to receive spikes to hold the tie plate in position on the tie.
The device will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View in elevation of the tie plate showing a rail in position,
Figure 2 is a top plan view,
Figure 3 a longitudinal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 a plan view of the base element,
Figure 6 a plan view-of the mating base element,
Figure 7 a side view in elevation, and
Figure 8 a view in perspective of one of the members.
In the drawings similar reference charac- 1 ters will be utilized to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
e device consists of two elements, namely a base element, and a sliding plate element B. The base elementA comprises a plate 1 having ribs 2 on its under face to prevent spreading of the rails when the tie plate is in position on the tie, and is also provided with one or more holes 3 adjacent each of its ends to receive spikes to hold the tie plate in position. The top face of the base plate 1* is provided with flanges 4 extending along the side edges thereof, and a flange 5 along one of its ends, and a jaw. member 6 mounted on said flanges adjacent one of the ends and so shaped as to engage the base of the railroad rail and extended upwardly and elongated as shown at 6 to form one of the members of a rail joint. The member 6 is also provided with openings 7 that aline with openings 3 on the corresponding end of the base plate 1.
The flanges 4 and 5 and the jaw 6 form a recess in the top of the base A and 8 indicates a plate slidably mounted in said re-. cess and having'a jaw 9 thereon correspond ing in construction. to the jaw 6, the side edges of said jaw extending beyond the side edges of the plate as shown at 9 to seat upon flanges 4 when the plate is in position on the base element A. Jaw 9 is also extended upwardly along the web of the rail and is elongated, 9 corresponding to the elongations 6 to engage the opposite face of the web of the rail. The plate 8 and jaw 9 are provided with openings l0 that register with openings 3 in the base plate 1 when the plate is in position as shown in the drawings, and spikes of any approved variety may be driven into openings 10 and 3 at one end, and openings 7, 10 and 3 at the other end to hold the tie plate in position on the tie, the jaws 6 and 9 engaging the railroad rail base to hold it securely locked relatively to the tie. replace a rail or make repairs the plate 8 and jaw 9 may be removed after removal of the spikes so that the rail may be removed from the base section A and another rail installed.
As shown in the drawings the parts 6 and 9 are secured to the rails at the joint by means of bolts 11.
at is claimed is 2- 1. A tie plate for railroad rails comprising a base, flanges extending upwardly from said base, the base provided with openings adjacent its ends, a jaw mounted on said flanges and the openings at one end of the base, a plate slidably mounted on said base between the flanges and having openings therein adapted to aline with the openings on the base, and a jaw on said plate and having openings therein ,alined with openings in the plate.
When it is desired to having openings alined with.
2. A tie plate for railroad rails comprising a base, flanges extending QPWardly from said base, the base provided With openings adjacent its ends a jaw mounted on said flanges and hai lng openings alin'ed With the openings at one end of the base, a plate slidably mounted on said base between the flanges and having penings .thetein adapted to aline With the Openings on the jaws andprovided with penings adapted to be secuied'td-the meeting ends of railroad rails. g
