To azz t5/@mamy 05mm.' y Be it known that I, CARL C. CHITTIM,."ay
citizen of the `United States, residingfat fpringfield, in the county krof VGreene` an'd Stateof Missouri, have invented certain newA and useful Improvements in a Cot, of which' the: following is a specification. j
The present invention relates to a cot hav#V ing for` its principal object to provide a structure capablel of. being folded so as to be readilyportable from place to placetaking up aminimum amount of space.
Another important objectl of the invention is to provideja cot. including a :structure which may be utilizedfas a veryy comfortable chair and as a stretcher.,Vv l f p Another limportant object ofthe .invenf tion is to provide a device of this 'nature which `will be simplejand efficient in construction, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, reliable in use and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. Y
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope ofvwhat is claimed, without departing from t-he spirit of the inven' tion.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of the device showing the same used as a chair.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same used as a cot,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan of the device showing the legs folded,
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the device folded, v
Figure 5 is a detail enlarged section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 2 looking to the left,
Figure 6 is a detail view showing a side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is a similar view showing the same structure folded.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that they device consists of a frame formed by the longitudinal members 1: and 2 which are formed insections yhinged together as at 3. A suitable flexible material 4 spans i ,thev longitudinal -members 1 and 2 and such 'material would preferably be can-y vas,r One pair 'of sections of the longitudinalfmen'lbersl 1 and 2 have hinged thereto a pair of legs 6 adjacent one end and a pair oflegs 7 adjacenttheir other end. A'singler pair'of legs 8 are hingedly" connected to the other sections 9. As is indicated to advantage in Figures 1 and 2, theV legs 6" and 7 are -disposed so as to diverge .from each other when in an 'extendedk orwnonfolded position. The legsS asis indicated in F igure` 2 diverge from the legs 6 and extend substantially parallel with the legs 7.V I have provided-means for 'locking the two legs of the pairs 6, 7 and-8 in'spaced'rela-v tliontoeach other. `Thismeans consists of the. two rods 10 which arepivoted together at 11 and to the'l 'legs' at 12., ".'Ihe Vpivoted ends 11 of the rod 10 'being provided with offset lips 11 abut each other when the rods are positioned in their extended positions as is shown in Figure 1. A second pair of rods 13 are pivoted to the vlegs at 14 and together atfll. The pivot 11 is in the form of a bolt piercing the inner ends of rods 1() and 13 and it is to be noted that this bolt will be located between a line joining the pivots 14- and a line joining the pivots 12 when the` legs are in extendedy and braced positions. The rods 13 4are formed in sections which are pivoted together at 15. The sections of the rods 13 are provided at their pivoted ends 15 with offset lips 15 which abut each other when the rods are extended as shown in Figure 1. When the sections are in alignment with each other, the legs are securely locked in spaced relation and in order to y break the sections out of alignment it is necessary to lift upwardly at the pivot points 15.
The manner in which the variouslegs are hinged to the frame is indicated to advantage in Figures 5, 6 and 7 wherein it will be seen that the leg 8 at its upper end is provided with a pair of plates l17 which are provided with curved extensions 18 pivoted by the rivet or bolt 19 to the frame. When the legs are in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 it will be seen that the top of the leg abuts the frame so that it will re-l main in the extended position until placed in a folded position because of the obtuse angle formed between the frame and the legs in the direction in which the leg would pivot to a closed position.
When the device is used as a. stretcher a f Figure pair of brace rods 20' pivoted to the sections 9 and terminating in hooked ends engage with pins 2l on the frame. When itis desired to use the device as a chair, the sections 9 are raised to the position indicated in Figure l and the rods 20 have their hooked ends engaged with the pins 22 on the sections 5.
hen it is desired to is necessary to do is to break the rods 13 so that their sections will be out or alignment with each other and the longitudinal members l and 2 may be placed in substantial abutment with each other as indicated in l at which time the sections 5 and 9 may be folded over against each other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is z- 1. A device of the class described includtold the cot all that ing a trame, foldable legs on the trarne, said legs arranged in pairs, a pair of rods one pivoted to each of the legs and pivoted to each other at their other ends, said last mentioned ends being provided with offset abutting lips adapted to engage with each other when the rods are in an extended position, a second pair of rods formed in sections pivoted together, the ends o' the sections pivoted together being pro-vided with offset lips adapted to abut each other when the rods ar extended, one of said latter rods pivoted to each of the legs and pivoted to each other at the point where the rst mentioned rods are pivoted together.
2. A device of the class described including a trame, oldable legs on the Jframe arranged in pairs, two rods pivoted at their outer ends to the legs of each pair, two other rods pivoted at their outer ends to the legs of each pair above the points at which the rst mentioned legs are pivoted, a pivot pin passing through the inner end of all Jfour rods, each of the second mentioned rods being formed in two sections, stop hinges pivoting the two sections together, and stop hinges disposed between the rst mentioned rods, all of said stop hinges being oldable in one direction only, said pin, when the legs are in extended and braced position, being located between a line joining the pivots of the first mentioned rods with the legs and another line joiningthe pivots of the second mentioned rods with the legs.
In testimony whereoil aiiix my signature. CARL C. CHITTM.
