IMPROVEMENT IN BOCK-HOLDERS.

Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved book-holder fory -invalid readers, which shall be simple in construction and con-v venient in use, holding the book securely, and in such a way that the leaves can be conveniently turned, and which will enable the book to be easily raised and lowered, and set at any desired inclination.

The invention consists in the spring-bars, the socket-blocks, and the upright rods, in combination with each other, for supporting the device by which the book is held; in the springs, the hooks, the notched wheels, the pivots, and the bars, in combination with the upright rods, the socket-blocks, and the spring-bars, for supporting the book adjustably; and in the sliding blocks, the hooks, the set-screws, the pivoted fingers, the studs, and the springs, in combination with the bars, for holding the cover and leaves of a book, as hereinafter fully described.

A are three thin spring-bars, the middle parts of which are parallel, and which are connected near their ends by cross-bars c. The end parts of the bars A are inclined toward each other and bent upward, and are attached to the socket-blocks B, in the upper ends of which are formed three holes or sockets to receive the lower ends of the uprights or rods C. Two of said holes or sockets in each block are vertical, and the other two are inclined in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 4, to allow the rods G to be set either vertical or inclined forward or backward, as occasion requires. Upon the rods C are placed coiled springs D, to the upper and lower ends of which are attached the upper and lower ends of the hook-bars E, one or both of which has a projection or toe, c', formed upon its lower part, for the notched or ratchet wheels F to catch upon. To the centers of the notched wheels F arie attached outwardlyprojecting pivots G,which it and work in the hooks E, and have heads formed upon their outer ends to prevent them from being drawn out of said hooks. To the two wheels F are attached the ends of two parallel rods, H, the middle parts of which are slightly curved, and upon which are placed two sliding blocks, I, which have inwardly-projecting hooks J formed upon them to receive the side edges of the book-cover, which are clamped against said hooks by the setscrews K, which pass in through the sliding blocks I. The leaves of the book are held by the ngers L, pivoted to the outer ends of the short studs or pins M, attached to the blocks I, and upon which are placed coiled springs N, which-are connected with the ingers L, and by which said fingers are held down upon the bookleaves.

By this construction, by moving the fingers L to one side, the leaves can be conveniently turned. n

In using the holder, the bars A are placed upon the bed just beneath the shoulders of the invalid. The book is adjusted to the proper height by sliding the springs D up or down upon the rods C, and is adjusted at the desired inclination by raising the pivots Gr from the hooks E sufficiently to free the wheels F from the toes c. The book is adjusted farther from or nearer to his eyes by placing the lower ends of the rods C in the nearest or farthest holes of the socket-blocks B.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the base-bars A and blocks B, having vertical and inclined holes or sockets, of the upright rods C, sup.- porting the book-holding frame, as shown and described.
