RIGID WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osnrrr Juror, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Rigid rench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an appliance for holding, tightening and removing nuts, lug screws and the like and an object of the invention is to provide a wrench of simple and durable construction that is easy to adjust and convenient to use.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench rigidly constructed with jaws that are adjustable toward and from one another and provided with faces that have recesses therein adapted to engage four sides of various size nuts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. wrench with aws adjustable toward or from one another by means of a revoluble hand grip so that the. wrench can be oper ated with one hand to free or engage a nut.
A feature of the invention is shown in the construction of the aws which are provided with oppositely arranged recesses and central channels extending through the recesses that form very eii'ective gripping surfaces.
A feature of the invention is shown in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby the movable jaw is actuated toward a fixed jaw by rotation of a handle.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detail description. and the appended claim.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention.
Figure 1 is a broken sectional side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the fixed jaw detachably connected to the shank and showing the shank threaded through the movable jaw, and the movable jaw provided with guides to prevent it rotating on the shank when the handle is rotated.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 00 Fig. 1, with parts shown on a slightly reduced scale.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 00 Fig. 1, showing the fixed and movable jaws with a nut secured between them.

The wrench 1 comprises a shank 2 to one Serial No. 606,360.
end of which is connected a fixed jaw 3, which is detachably connected thereto.
The shank 2 is provided with a spindle 1 that is reduced in size relative to the shank so: as to form a shoulder 5 that abuts the inner face 6 of jaw 3 when the spindle 1 is extended through the opening 7 and secured to the jaw 3 by any suitable means.
The handle 12 is secured to the end of shank 2 by a pin 16, and the end 9 of the shank is preferably provided with a left hand thread and this threaded end passes through the threaded opening 17 in the jaw 13. Also jaw 13 is provided with the openings 18 through which the guides 19 extend.
The guides 19 have their ends 20 threaded through and secured to the fixed jaw 3 by opposing nuts 21, 22 and the inner face 6 of jaw 3 is recessed to receive the nuts 22 which in fixed position are imbedded in the jaw 3 and have their outer surfaces flush with the face 6.
The other ends 23 of guides 19 are threaded and extend through openings in a plate 2a that is loosely mounted on the shank 2 and the ends 23 are secured to the plate 2 1 by the opposing nuts 25, 26.
When the handle 12 is rotated in either direction it forces the movable jaw 13 toward or away from the fixed jaw 3.
By the foregoing construction a wrench is formed that is very rigid in use; that is when the jaws 3, 13 are contacted with the sides of a nut they are not displaced, or loosened by force applied to the shank 2 to turn the jaws on an axis but are held in firm contact with the nut they engage. Also by the foregoing construction the jaws 3, 13 are always held in parallel planes, and the movable jaw 13 can be moved a great or infinitesimal amount by rotation of the barn dle by which arrangement and movement the adjustable jaw as well as the fixed jaw can be fitted perfectly to a nut or bolt head having parallel sides.
The jaws 3, 13 are formed with hammer and tapered ends 27, 28 respectively, and in the adjacent faces of the hammer and tapered ends are cross recesses 29 formed with two sides that are at right angles, and the recesses are arranged opposite one another, or so they will register when the jaws are closed.
The recesses are arranged to receive the corners of a nut as shown in Fig. 1, and as seen therein all four sides of the nut 30 are engaged by the sides of the recesses and any of the numerous cross recesses can so be employed.
In the tapered ends of the jaws 8, 13 are center recesses 31 that are arranged centrally in the adjacent faces of the jaws and intersect the cross recesses 29 at right angles; and the center recesses have two sides that are arranged at right angles to one another; and the purpose of these adjacent center re cesses is to grip a nut 32 that lies in a position opposite to nut 31, or in a position that would be difficult to engage by the walls of the cross recesses 29.
The tapered ends 28 of the wrench are of considerable length so that they can be extended deep down in a recess to grip a nut.
In operation the handle 12 is manipulated to actuate the movable jaw 13 toward or away from the fixed aw 3. \Vhen the jaws are fixed on a nut or lug screw either to seat or remove them, force is applied through the shank to rotate the jaws around an axis in a direction that will accomplish the purpose.
In Fig. 1 the spindle at is journaled in the fixed jaw 3 and held therein by means of the nut 8 threaded on the spindle 4. The pin 8" prevents accidental displacement of the nut 4'.
I claim.
A rigid wrench comprising a shank provided with a left hand threaded portion; a spindle at one end of said shank provided with a threaded end; a fixed jaw mounted on said spindle; a nut threaded to the threaded end of said spindle to secure said jaw on said spindle; guides parallel with said shanks and provided with threaded ends, nuts threaded on one end of said guides, the inner face of said fixed jaw being provided with recesses to receive the nuts threaded on said guides; other nuts threaded on said guides securing said fixed guides to said fixed jaw; a movable jaw on the threaded portion of said shank and provided with openings through which said guides extend; a plate loosely mounted on said shank and provided with openings to receive the other ends of said guides; opposing nuts for securing said plate to said guides; a handle on said shank; and a pin adapted to secure said handle to said shank so that when the handle is rotated in either direction the movable jaw will be forced toward or away from the fixed jaw according to the direction the handle is rotated.
