STENCIL HAND STAMP.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. Mason, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Stencil Hand Stamp, of which the following is, a specification. I

This invention relates to stencil hand stamps, and particularly to those of the type which carries an inking pad, in front of which is a removable stencil frame, having a stencil sheet on which any desirid inscription may be cut. 7 I

The general ,object of the present invention is to simplify and otherwise improve the construction of stencil hand stamps of this type with a view to reducing the cost of their manufacure, promoting their efficiency, and facilitating their assembly and operation.

Reference is made to the patents of George T. Pritchard, No. 1,445,447, dated February 18,1923, and 1,468,512, dated September 13, 1923, for improvements in stencil hand stamps, on which my improvements are based. In these patents there is disclosed a stamp comprising a sheet metal body member of rectangular shape having one face open andprovided with transverse lips at opposite ends. Mounted to slide at the ends under the lips is a flat cover plate which closes the open face of the body memher, and is held in closed position by snap springs which engage the body member. A handle is secured to the cover plate and serves as a means for sliding the cover plate and also as an operating handle for the stamp. At opposite ends of the body member are secured clips for engaging the ends of the stencil frame. This construction necessitates separate holding means for the cover plate and the stencil frame. I have improved this by providing, spring clips which accomplish the dual purpose of looking the cover to the body member, and holding the stencil frame in position.

Also in said Pritchard patents there is provided a foraminous sheet metal receptacle which fits within and is separated from the body member and bears upon the pad to hold the latter in place. In my device the body member is in the form of a box with its bottom struck up to form a perforated dia phragm which is elevated and shaped to depad, thereby combining in one part or element the body member and foraminous re ceptacle of the Pritchard patents.

The invention consists further in certain details ofcons'truction and combinations of elements which will be more particularly explained in the following description, which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred form of the invention.

The diaphragm 6 is provided with numerous perforation 8, through which the ink may be uniformly distributed over the pad 7. The ends of the body portion 5 are formed at their upper edges with outwardly turned flanges 9, which may be slightly beveled, and are adapted to fit within grooves 10 formed by the downturned flanges at the ends of the cover 11. A suitable handle 12 is secured to the cover 11 by a screw 1%, or equivalent means, and resilient strips 18 are secured to the cover and extend downwardly over the endsthereof. These strips may be secured in any suitable manner, but it is preferred to have them integrally connected,

adapted to engage and support the stencil frame 18 in operative relation to the ink pad 7. The end portion 16 of each strip is formed intermedlately with a corrugated or U-shaped portion 19, which may be brought into registry with the corresponding groove to permit the outturned flange 9 of the body portion 5 to slide therethrough when the cover 11 is removed therefrom. l/Vhen, however, the clip 17 is drawn downwardly to engage and hold the end of the stencil frame 18, the corrugation 19 is drawn downwardly, and the upper part of the downturned end portion 16 securely locks the cover 11 to the box 5.

From the foregoing description it will be noted that the invention is of very simple construction, consisting merely of a main one-piece body portion and a cover, which may be locked in fixed relation by the downturned portions of the strip 13 when the stencil frame is attached, but are easily separated when the stencil frame is detached to permit the clips to spring upwardly. A unitary locking device, therefore, serves the dual purpose of locking the. cover to the body, and holding the stencil frame 18.

hen the combined locking device and stencil holder is in operative position, it rests against the main body member, which serves to make it more rigid, and also improves the appearance of the device.

Although I have shown and described the specific details of a single form of the invention, it is to be understood that this is merely illustrative, and that various modifications may be made therein without any material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a body member having means for holding an ink pad, a removable cover, for that face of the body member remote from the stencil frame, and unitary means for locking the cover and also securing a stencil frame in operative relation to a pad held by said holding means.

2. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a body member having means for holding an ink pad, a removable cover, for that face of the body member remote from the pad, and means attached to said cover and movable into position to engage and retain a stencil frame across the bottom of said body member, said last-mentioned means when engaged by said stencil frame being held thereby in position to lock the cover to the body member, but removable, when released from said frame, into position to release the cover from the body member.

3. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a body member having means for holding an ink pad, a stencil frame adapted to be supported underneath a pad so held, a removable cover member for that face of the body member remote from the stencil frame,

spring clips attached to the cover member and movable into position to engage and retain said stencil frame, said clips when engaged with the stencil frame being held thereby in position to lock the cover to the body member, but movable by their resiliency, when released from the frame, into position to release the cover from the body member.

4. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a body member, a cover therefor, said cover and body member having (:0- engaging flanges forming sliding connections by which the cover may be removably held, said flanges having notches which are in registry when the cover is closed, means attached to the cover and operable to hold a stencil frame in operative relation to the body member, said means when the frame is so held passing through said notches to lock the cover on the body member, but having opposed grooves which, when the frame is removed, are movable into registry with the flanges on the body member to permit the cover to be removed therefrom.

5. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a body member, a cover member therefor provided with a handle, one of said members having opposed parallel flanges and the other having opposed grooves slidably receiving said flanges, spring clips secured to the cover member and having downturned ends engageable with a stencil frame to hold the latter in operative rela tion to'the body member, said flanges having notches through which said spring clips pass to lock the cover member to the body member when the clips are engaged by the stencil frame, said clips having grooves which, when the stencil frame is released, may be brought into registry with said first-mentioned grooves to permit the cover member to be removed from the body member.

6. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a one-piece body member in the form of a substantially rectangular box with an open top and with a portion of its bottom perforated and formed with a recess in its under side of a size'to receive and hold an ink pad, a stencil frame adapted to be secured underneath an ink pad so held, a removable cover for the open top of said box, means for locking the cover to the box, and means for securing the stencil frame. v

7. In a stencil hand stamp, the combination of a one piece body member in the form of a substantially rectangular box with an open top and with a portion of its bottom perforated and formed with a recess in'its under side of a size to receive and hold an ink pad, a stencil frame adapted to be secured underneath an ink pad so held, a removable cover for the open top of said boX, and unitary means for locking the cover and also securing the stencil frame.

8. In a stencil hand stamp, the combina tion of a one-piece body member in the form of a box With an open top and with a portion of its bottom perforated and raised to form a recess in its under side of a size to receive and hold an ink pad, a stencil frame adapted to be secured underneath an ink pad so held, a removable cover for the open top of said box, means attached tosaid cover and movable into position to engage and retain said stencil frame, said lastmentioned means When engaged by the stencil frame being held thereby in position to lock the cover to the body member, but movable, When released from said frame, into position to release the cover from the body member.
