Description

` UNITED :STATES ADAM WELLSHMIDI, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN IWATER-METERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,934, dated September 8, 1874; application filed To all whom't may concern Beit known that I, ADAM WELLsHMIDT, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of VNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Meters 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is al full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked theron, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in water-meters, and consists in the employment f of a hollow rocking beam, to the ends of which are attached flexiblel pouches, in combination with connecting-rods to rocking valves that regulate the ilow of the liquid to and from the meter. The eXible pouches aforesaid are filled with air or liquid in such a manner that one pouch is empty when the other one is lled, and vice versa, the contents of *one pouch `passing from and to the other one through the hollow rocking beam to the ends of which the pouches are attached. The pin on which the rocking beam rocks may be connected to any suitable registering apparatus by which the amount of liquid that passes through the meter for each stroke of the rocking beam can be accurately ascertained, as will now be more fully shown and described.
y On the drawings, Figure l represents a ground plan of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line A B; and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line@ D.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the differents parts of the drawings. e
a a represent two cylinders or receptacles for the liquid that is to be measured. The cylinders 0ll a' are covered at the top by means of the cover b, as shown in Fig. 2. The receptacles a a are secured to the base c, in which is located the valve-chest d and the rocking valves c c', as shown in Fig. 2. In the. cover b is located a hollow beam, f, that is made to Y rock on a fulcrum, g, in a manner as will hereinafter be described. Elastic diaphragms h h are closely attached between the upper ends May 22j, 1874.
of the receptacles a a and the open ends of the hollow beam f, for the purpose of preventing the liquid in one of the said receptacles from 1 entering the other 011e. Connecting-rods it are vmade to connect each end of thehollow beam f with each of the hinge-pins k 1c on the rockin g l valves ec', as shown in Fig. 2. 'I o each end of the hollow beam fis closely tted an elastic pouch,l Z', the lower ends of which pouches are closely fitted around the lower ends of each of the connecting-rods M', by which a communication is established between the elastic pouches ZZ through the-hollow beam The valves e e are provided with curved elastic faces m m, tted to the metallic valves in a suitable manner. The valve-chest d is divided in two compartments, n and o, by means of the wall p, as shown in Fig. 2. A pipe, n', in communication with the compartment a, represents the supply-pipe through which theliquid enters the meter, and a pipe, o, in communication with the compartment o, represents the delivery-pipe through which the liquid is forced out after passing through the meter. Two openings, q q', are madefrom the compartment a, and two openings, r fr', are made from the compartment o, to the receptacles a and a', as shown in Fig. 2. To the lower ends of each of the connecting-rods i i is jointed a friction-roller, s s', that moves over the surface of each of the grooved plates t t as the beam f is rocked on its fulcrum g. The grooved plates t t' are made adjustable from or toward-the friction-rollers s s by means of the setscrews u u 'u' u', as shown. The pouches l Z' are to be partially filled with air, gas, or suitable liquids, to such an extent that one of the said pouches shall be empty, or nearly so, when the other one is filled. The
the upper part of the rocking beam f, which hole is afterward closed by a set-screw, o.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The water, entering through the pipe a', passes through the opening q into the chamber a, in so doing compressing the elastic pouch l and forcing the gas or liquid contained therein through the hollow beam f into `the other pouch, l', thereby forcing the liquid contained in the pipe o. As the pressure in the chamber c in- PATENT FFICE.
pouches can easily beilled through a hole in chalnber a/ out through the opening 1"' andv creases, it ultimately expands'the diaphragm h upward, and, in so doing, automaticallyv opens the opening q', when the liquid enters through the opening q to the chamber a', where asimilar operation is performed as heretofore described in relation to the chamber a. In this manner, it will be seen that, as the liquid enters successively one or the other of the chambers a a', so is the beam f rocked on its fulcrum, by which, and a suitable registering apparatus in connection with the said rocking shaft g, the proper amount of liquid that passes through the apparatus can easily be ascertained.
This, my improved meter, can also be used as a motor, operated by gas or liquids of a suitable pressure, as maybe desired.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. rIhe combination of thc rocking beam f, jointed rods i i, valves e e' with their rollers s s', and elastic curved plates m m', and the adj ustable grooved plates't t', as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
2. The combination, construction, and arrangement of the hollow rocking beam f, diaphragms h h', elastic pouches l l', receptacles a a', connecting-rods c' i', valves e e', rollers s s', grooved plates t t', elastic plates m m', the inlets q q, andthe outletsr r', as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ADAM WELLSHMIDT.
