UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
JOHN F. LINDBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR T0 RELIANCE DIE AND STAMP- ING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ELECTRIC CO'NDENSER.
Application led December 19, 1923. Serial'No. 681,614.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. LINDBERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electric Condensers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to those condensers which employ rotatively adjustable sides, and, more particularly, to such a condenser in which the adjustable side thereof is provided with two adjusting mechanisms, one for procuring an approximate or coarse adjustment and the other a fine or finishing adjustment of the adjustable condenser side.
In such a condenser, a speed decreasing lcam mechanism has been employed which intervenes between the adjustable condenser side and an operating shaft, this mechanism servin to retard the movement of the adjustabIe condenser side with respect to the speed of the adjusting shaft. The cam shaft was directly carried by one bearing and also was journaled in a quill shaft which carried the adjustable condenser side. This quill shaft was journaled at one end in another bearing and at'its other end upon the cam shaft and, through the cam shaft, upon the aforesaid bearing for the cam shaft. Such an arrangement was apt to permit the adjustable condenser side to have short circuiting contact with the complemental condenser side, particularly if the cam shaft had loose fit within the quill shaft. I overcome this objection by providing an improved construction enabling the provision of a complete bearing support for the quill shaft that is altogether independent of the cam shaft.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying ldrawing in which Fig. lisa longitudinal elevation of the preferred embodiment of the invention; Flg. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end view; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4'of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The condenser illustrated includes two mounting plates 1 and 2 of insulating material which are assembled upon threaded metallic rods 3 by means of nuts 4. These mounting plates are suitably assembled with the mounting board or panel 5. One of the condenser sides is composed of a group of metallic leaves 6 through which the rods 3 pass and which are electrically connected by means of metallic washers 7 which are interposed between and metallically connect the contiguous plates 6. The other condenser side is composed of a group of metallic leaves 8, these leaves being alternated with the leaves of the first group, as illustrated. The condenser side 8 i's mounted to be adjustable with respect to the other condenser side, the adjustable group being rotatably supported upon the insulatin mounting plates 1 and 2 and rotatable within cylindrical openings in these therefore also constitute bearings.
The support for the group leaves 8 which is rotatively mounted in the plates 1 and 2 is inclusive of a rotatable sleeve or hollow shaft 9 having a knob 10 upon the outer end thereof, this knob being provided with scale marks upon its periphery, and being rotatable in front 'of marking upon panel 5, whereby the extent of rotative movement of the rotatable condenser side carried thereby may readily be determined. The leaves 8 are spaced apartl by washers 8. The set screw 11 carried by the collar 82 prevents the hollow or quill shaft 9 from being moved forwardly longitudinally of its axis. This shaft is formed with a shoulder 12 which engages the inner face of plate 1 to prevent the shaft from moving rearwardly. The set screw and shoulder thus confine the quill shaft to a fixed zone of relation. The inner shaft 13 is the cam shaft for effecting refined or finishing adjustment of the condenser. Shaft 13 is journaled in the bore of the hollow shaft or sleeve 9. Its front end projects beyond -`.the front of the knob l0 and carries a knob 13 that bears suitable scale marks upon its periphery to cooperate with suitable marking upon the knob 10 in defining the extent of the refining adjustment of the inner shaft with respect to the hollow shaft. There is a nut 14 screwed upon the inner end of the hollow shaft 9 for clamping the leaves 8 and washers 8 and the collar 82 together. The nut 14 has an annular channel 15 formed therein. This annular channel receives the ends of a forked lever 16, the base end of this thereon which receives the tail 18 of 81xplates, that lever having a fork 17 i other forked lever 19. The latter forked lever is upon the outer or rear side of plate 1 being journaled upon a stud shaft 20 which is carried upon and projects rearwardly from said mounting plate. The inner end of cam shaft 13 carries an eccentric disc or cam 21 which is received between the sides of the forked lever 19 and which serves to o scillate this forked lever upon its shaft 20, the oscillating movement of the lever 19 causing a corresponding oscillating movement of the lever 16 through the intermediation of the engagement between these two levers at 17, 18.
The lever 16 is formed of spring metal, the space between its jaws being sufficiently reduced to enable the forked sides of the lever to have gripping engagement with the base of the annular channel 15. The sides of the forked end of the lever are desirably extended to receive an adjusting screw 23 to adjust the friction between this lever and disc. It will be apparent that the knob 13 upon the shaft 13, while being turned in a uniform direction7 will cause the oscillation of the lever 16 and the shaft 9 in frictional engagement therewith at 14. This frictional engagement is such that it may be overcome when the knob l0 is turned to turn the shaft 9 to effect coarse or approximate adjustment, the finer adjustment being effected by turning the knob 13 and the shaft 13, thecam and lever mechanism 21, 16, 19, etc., constituting speed decreasing mechanism that couples the shaft 13 with the adjustable condenser side. The tail 18 may operate in a hole 1 in plate 1, though levers 16 and 19 may be otherwise articulated.
The spring arm 22 is clamped at its base end between the head of the stud shaft 20 and the forked lever 16. It presses at its other end against the projecting rear end of shaft 13 and serves as a medium for including the adjustable condenser side in circuit.
By placing the cam 21 and the fork 19 upon one side, preferably the rear side, of the mounting plate 1 and the nut 14 and fork 16 upon the other side of this plate, the quill shaft may be journaled upon said plate. Hitherto, all of the cam mechanism was placed between the mounting plates 1 and 2 making it necessary to journal the inner shaft 13 upon plate 1 and the hollow shaft 9 upon shaft 13.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-v ters Patent the following 1. A condenser including the two sides thereof; a hollow shaft upon which one of said condenser sides is mounted and itself mounted to turn whereby the condenser side carried thereby is made adjustable with respect to the other condenser side; a second shaft within the hollow shaft and adapted to turn with respect thereto; speed reducing cam and lever mechanism establishing turning connection between the second'shaft and the adjustable condenser side; and la mounting upon which the hollow shaft is journaled and disposed between portionsf'of said cam and lever mechanism.

A condenser including the two sides thereof; a hollow shaft upon which one of said condenser sides is mounted and itself mounted to turn whereby the condenser side carried thereby is'made adjustable with respect to the other condenser side; a second shaftwithin the hollow shaft and adapted to turn with respect thereto;l speed reducing mechanism establishing turning connection between the second shaft and the adjustable condenser side; and a mounting upon which the hollow shaft is journaled; said mechanism including a lever in frictional connection with the hollowV shaft, a cam upon the other shaft, and a lever engaged by the cam and articulated with 'the other lever, said mounting being between said lever.
