ZENO DAUGHDRILL, OF GORSICANA; TEXAS.
APPARATUS FOR TREATING OIL.
Applicationflled ti'ebruary 16, 1925. Serial No. 9,676.
To (112 whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ZENO E. DAUonnmL,
a. citizen of the United States, residing at Corsicana, in the county of Navarro. and
State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Treating Oil, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a new and improved apparatus for treating oil with which are mixed water and gas. Considerable difficulty is usually experienced in affecting the complete, efiicient separation of these ingredients and it is an object of the present invention to provide a compact and simple apparatus which, by the use of steam, will quickly separate the mixture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel steps in the method and in certain details of construction of the apparatus which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. 1 p
In the accompanying drawing which is a section through the apparatus used, one form of mec anism for carrying out the method has been disclosed.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference 1 designates the tank of any suitable proportions having an oil outlet pipe 2 extending from the top portion thereof. An outlet pipe or syphon 3 for carrying off water and other heavy fluids, communicates with the bottom portion of the tank as shown at 4 and also with an intermediate portion of the tank shown at 5, both of these points of communication being below the level of the water to be drawn from the tank.
-The outlet 5 is preferably downturned as shown.
The top of the tank may be conical as shown at 6 and is closed, this top support- .inga drum"7 constituting a gas separator. The drum has its bottom downwardly to an outlet pipe 8- which exortion tapered tends downwardly within the central portion of the tank 1 and is rovided with a desired number of radial yextended outlet pipes 9 each of which has its fr'ee end up turned within the tank 1 as shown at 10. In the 'outlet portion of each of the branch pipes 9' is a nozzle 11 discharging toward the outlet and connected to a pi e 12 which 1s supported below the free en portion of the branch pipe and has an inlet 13 in the.
In .using this apparatus the mixture of oil, water and gas is conducted to the drum 7 by the pipes Band 17 and discharged downwardly. As the mixture is delivered into the drum the gases will be separated therefrom and will rise and flow outwardly into pipe 16. The water and oil mixture, however, will flow downwardly within pipe 8 and be delivered radially through pipes 9' and thence upwardl into the tank at the outlet 10. Steam is irected into the respective pipes 12 and will be delivered in a jet toward each outlet 10. The steam will act to break up the mixture of oil and Water as it flows toward the outlet 10, the oil rising to a higher level than the Water within the tank 1. It will be noted that the steam will flow past the inlet 13. Thus a portion of the tank will be kept in circulation, this Water entering the inlet 13, flowing along pipe 12 with the steam, and being delivered with the steam from the nozzle 11. By thus keeping the water in circulation the tendency of recombining with the oil is eliminated and the separation is more rapidly and efliciently efl'ected than would otherwise be possible. Oil is withdrawn through the pipe 2 at will while the water level can be maintained where desired by drawing ofi' quantities through either or both of the outlets 4 and 5.
What is claimed is 1. Apparatus of the class described including a tank having an oil outlet and-a water outlet at diiferent levels respectively, a pipe opening into the lower portlon of the tank, for delivering a mixture of oil and water to the tank, a delivering pipe extending from said first named pipe having an outlet opening into the tank, a steam nozzle within the outlet pipe, a steam .pipe communicating an 011 outlet adjacent the top with the nozzle, and a water inlet pipe opening into the steam pipe for directing water into said steam pipe from the interior of the tank.
2. Apparatus for use in the separation of oil, water and gas, including a tank having an oil outlet and a water outlet at difierent levels, a separating drumhaving a gas outlet, means for delivering a mixture of 011, water andgas into the drum to separate the gas from the mixture, a pipe for conveying a mixture of oil and water from the drum into the lower portion of the tank, delivering pipes extending from the first named pipe having outlets openmg mto the tank, asteam nozzle within each of said delivering pipes, a steam pipe communicating with each nozzle, and a water inlet plpe opening into each steam pipe for directing water into said pipe from the interior of the tank.
3. Apparatus for use in the separation of oil, water and gas, including a tank havin thereof an water outlet adjacent the bottom thereof, a separating drum above the tank having a. gas outlet at the top thereof, means for delivering a mixture of oil, water and as into the drum to separate the gas from t e mixture, a pipe extending from the drum to a point within and close to the bottom of the tank,
radial delivering pipes extending from the bottom of said downwardly extended pipe e z. E. DAUGHDRILL,
