Be it known that I, HARRY TUNSTALL, a subject of George V, King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing in Fair-haven, in the county of Bristol and State of lifassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detaching Roll Motions for Combing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In my Letters Patent No. 1,351,076 (application Serial No. 257,089) I have described in full a combing machine including the mechanism forming the subject matter of this application and of divisional application Serial No. $3 1,227 (Letters Patent No. 1,394,054) of which this is a division.
The main purpose of this mechanism is to give to the leather roll a motion around the axis of the steel roll, i. e., the roll nearest the comb, so that it may grasp the tuft at the proper time and assist properly in the piecing up of the sliver. Heretofore the necessary motions have usually been given to these parts by cams suitably cut and mounted. But it has been found by experience that cams, although usual, are undesirable in machinery of this class, because the fibre is short and delicate and any slight change in the movement of the parts operating upon it such as might be due to the wearing of'the cam, changes the character of the product of the machine, and the wearing of the cams can only be remedied at considerable expense.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown in its preferred form, only so much of the whole machine being shown as is necessary to indicate the mode of operation ofthe parts referred to. The specific machine to which it has been applied is shown and described in my Letters Patent No. 1,351,076 above referred to in which its cooperation with the other parts of a combing machine is described.

means of the gear 7, etc. (see my saitl application), carries a disk 105, which is connected by a crank pin 106 and a link 107 to a rocker arm 108 by an adjustable slotted connection 109, the rocker arm 108 being attached to the shaft 103.
84 is the lower fluted steel roll which is mounted on the shaft 87 supported in bearings in the uprights A A shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, as shown in said Letters Patcut.
93 is the bearing for one end of the leather roll 86 (the other end of the roll being provided with a similar bearing and mechanism), and it is mounted on the end of the spring 94, the rear end of which engages the pin 95 on the arm 97. A lever 96, also mounted on the arm 97, may be used to adjust the tension of this spring 95% (see Figs. 2 and 3). The arm 97 is mounted on a rocking frame 101 which is hung on the shaft 87 so that it may be oscillated round it and so always maintain uniform pressure and contact between the leather roll 86'and the fleece which is carried over the steel roll 84:. The frame 101 is pivotally connected at 1010 with the link 102, the other end of which is connected with the rocker arm 58 on shaft 103. The shaft 103 is mounted in suitable brackets supported by the uprights A and A, as shown in my said patent.
The operation and the theory of the above mechanism will be understood by reference to my above application. I do not mean to limit myself to the exact mechanism above described, as it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the details may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention. I have only shown and described one side of the machine. It will be understood that so far as is necessary the other side of the machine is provided with similar bearings, etc.
In the construction above described the frame carrying the leather roll being pivoted or hung on the shaft of the lower steel roll, the pressure of the leather roll is controlled solely by the spring which is mounted on the frame, the strength of spring being controlled by the lever 96 so that the pressure of the leather roll will always be uniform after the machine is adjusted. Heretoforc it has been the custom to control the What 1 claim as my invention 13:
1. In a combing machine, in combination with a lower detaching roll, a frame aXled on said roll and carrying an upper roll 10 adapted to rest on said lower roll, and means for rocking said frame whereby said upper roll will travel around the periphery of said lower roll.
2. In a combing machine, in combination with a lower detaching roll, a frame axled on said roll, a spring mounted on said frame, and said frame carrying an upper roll adapted to rest on said lower roll, and means for rocking said heme whereby said upper roll Will travel around the periphery of said lower roll, and means for controlling the pressure of said upper roll on said lower roll comprising a cam lever adapted to engage said spring.
