THE GRAPH la CO, FHOYO 'LITFLHS 8 4| PARK PLACE, MY,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE V. GRIFFITH, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters P'atent No. 154,669, dated September 1,1874; application filed April 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE V. GnIFFITH, of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a new Improvement in Hoops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the ends of a hoop inserted by my invention; and Fig.- 2, a sectional View of thesame.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a strong, cheap, and simple lock for barrel and other hoops, which shall enable the hoops to be sold in a completed state with their ends locked and ready to be applied to a barrel. To this end it consists in a strap of iron bent around the lapped ends of the hoop, and countersunk into their edges, as I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A A represent the ends of a hoop, the material of which is thicker at one edge than at the other, in order to give the inside of the hoop the proper inclination to fit the bulge of the barrel. B represents a'strap of stout iron, of sufficient length to extend nearly or quite around the lapped ends A A,
- constituting an effective look.
as shown in Fig. 2. The strap B is countersunk into the edges and back of the hoop, thus The extremity of the end A is secured to the end A by a suitable rivet, U. h
The hoop thus constructed is intended to be supplied to flour-packers and others as an article of trade.
I am aware that-a cotton-bale tie has heretofore been constructed, in which one end of the band is provided with a recess for the re ception of a link, which is also made to engage with one of several serrations made on the upper edge of the opposite end of the band, and I therefore lay no claim to a band thus constructed, as the link is extremely liable to become unloosed, or ride over the serrations when subjected to lateral pressure, which is not the case in my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
As a new article of manufacture, a barrelhoop, wedge-shaped in cross section, and locked together in the manner and by the means herein described.
GEORGE V. GRIFFITH. Witnesses:
