UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
FRANCIS MARBAUGH, OF PLEASANT MILLS, INDIANA.
FENCE.
Application filed October 9, 1923. Serial No. 667,572.
T all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, F nANoIs M. MAR- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pleasant Mills, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates in general to fences, and has for its objectto provide a fence construction which will be effective to prevent horses and cattle'from trampling down or leaning or bending over the elements making up the fence proper, thereby preserving the structural integrity of the fence and insuring the confinement of the animal. i Y
Another object is to provide a device of this character and having the foregoing advantages and capacities and which is at the same time, of simple and durable construction, reliable in operation, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the fence constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of a bracket and arm det-ached from the fence,
Figure 8 is a fragmentary plan view showing a bracket and arm as applied to one of the posts of the fence,
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section on the line 4 4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a View of a blank from which the brackets are constructed.
Referring to the drawings, wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral designates generally a fence which may include posts 11, and longitudinal fence wires 12 secured to the posts in any suitable or approved manner. A plurality of brackets designated generally at 15 are provided and are secured on certain of the posts 11 as will presently be described. Each bracket 15 may be constructed from a single piece of metal, in which event the bracket is preferably constructed from the blank B shown in Figure 5, the blank being first provided with a Y-shaped cut or incision C and, being next bent on lines a to provide spaced wings16 and a curved stop plate 17 connecting the lower edges of the wings. The blank is further bent on the lines d to provide attaching flanges 18 which extend at right angles from each wing. Prior to the bending of the blank on the lines Le-a and d, it is punched to provide holes 19 in the attaching flanges 18 to admit of the passage of screws 20 or other attaching means (see Figure 3), and to provide a pairof alined pivot openings 21 and aV plurality of pairs'of alined apertures 22. H
An elongated rigid arm 25 is provided for each bracket 15. Eacharm 25 has an eye 26 formed at its inner end. A pivot which may be in the form of a bolt or rivet 27 has its shank extending through the pivot openings 21 and through theopening of the eye 26 and in this manner, each arm 25 1s pivotally mounted on the spaced wings 16 of its bracket 15.
The arms 25 in one position exte-nd laterally inward from the fence, as shown in Figure 1, and in such position, may rest on the stop plate 17 Inanother positionof adjustment, the arms 25 extend vertically from the brackets 15 as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, and in this position the arms 25 are spaced inwardly from, though substantially parallel to, the fence posts upon which the brackets 15 are mounted.
Means is provided for releasably holding the arms 25 in any of the positions to which they may be adjusted, and for this purpose, a pin 28 is provided for each bracket and selectively cooperable with any pair of apertures 22. Obviously, when the pin 28 is inserted in the apertures 22 which lie immediately above the arm 25, when the same is in a horizontal position and resting on the stop plate 17, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, it will serve to prevent upward displacement of the arms 25. On the other hand, when this pin 28 is inserted in the apertures 22 which lie just to the right of the arm 25 in its vertical position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the pin will prevent downward displacement of the arms 25. Preferably the pin 28 is in the form of a cotter key so that it may be conveniently and releasably secured in any pair of apertures 22.
llU
Figures 1,3.and 1l, and in full lines inV FigureQ. In this adjustment the arms 25 extend laterally or horizontally in from the fence and dispose the strand of barbed Wire 30 inwardly o'l the fence and in spaced relation thereto. 'llVith this arrangement, the cattle orA horses in the pasture when appreaching the fence, Will Iii-st encounter a single strand of barbed Wire 30 which Will efectively deter them and prevent the animal from leaning or bendingover or trainpling` down the fence proper.
When the fence is used to enclose. cultivatedland, the arms are positioned as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 so as not to interfere with the cultivation ot the entire area of the iield. rThe ends oi; the strand of barbed wire 30 are tied or secured by suitable fastening devices to the arnis 25 which lie or occur at the ends ot the field.
I claim: Y
l. Thecombination of a bracket havinir a pair of spaced Wings, an arm, a pivot` for swingably mounting the arm on the spaced Wings, said bracket also having a. stop Yplate for limiting` the ldownward movement of the arm, said Wings having a plurality of pairs of alined apertures, anda pin selectively eooperable with any pair of alined apertures and engageable with said arm lfor releasably holding,` the arm in adjusted position. Y f
2. In combination with a fence, a plurality oi' bracketsmounted on posts of the fence, each br'aeket'including a pair ot spaced Wings having attachingviianges fastened to the post upon which the bracket is mounted, said bracket also having` a stop plate connecting the spaced wings, said spacedwings being, provided with a plurality of pairs ot alined apertures, an elongated rigid rarm for each bracket, a pivot vforsivingably mounting the inner end olf each arm on the wings of the bracket, each arm being e'ngageable with theA stop plate in one adjustment whereby the downward movementl oit the arm is limited, a pin selectively cooperable with the pairs 'of apertures and engageable with said arm for releasably holding` the arm in adjusted position, eaeharin having its outer end provided with a keeper, and a strand of barbed Wire carried by the keepers at the-,outer ends of the arms of the brackets. FRANCIS M. MARBi-XUGH.
