Be it known thatI, `ISAAC L. EDWARDS, re1- siding at Aurora, Illinois, a citizen-of the United v`States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Tie Plates, of which thefollowing isa specifica- My inventionV relates to railroadk roadfbed appliances. My object, stated Wlthreference to what I now consider the best and most complete embodiment of my inventlon, is to .provide a 'combined tie'plate andbrace which, with a minimum,` of metal, will securely: hold the' rail againstthe up andfdown motions that tendv to Vloosen its fastemngsr, longitudinal motions that cause it to creep and side-wise motions that cause spreading, and which nevertheless will 'require but 'a minimum olf-labor and time for removal of the rail, from, and replacement on, the ties when necessar My invention consists in whatever is described byor is ,included within the terms or scope of the appended claims.`

In what I consider now the best embodiment of my invention, I make the tie plate of two metal plates of the same dimensions, and rectangular in form, one laid upon the other, so that, in elect,` a laminated plate is the result, thus providing a lower plate l0, and an upper plate 11, upon which the rail base rests, the two plates `being provided with alining spike holes 12. The upper plate is preferably made of malleable steel, whereas the lower or base plate may be made of inferior steel or iron, thus enabling a less costlyY co'nstructionthan would be the case of a single plate of the same thickness of the' two, and made of high grade metal.
On the sides parallel with the rail 13, (shown in brokenlines), the base plate has over the top of the top plate, and thereby any upward tendency of the top plate is resisted.

Any uprnotion tendency ofgthe -rail under the loadof passing trainsis trans mitted to the top plate, and from the latter the conjoint action of the lugs 14 and the spikes through holes 12, upward motion of the rail and plate 1l is opposed. Downward presure of theloaded rail is distributed through the plates of muchwider area than that of the rail base immediately above the tie, and, hence, localized,unit pressure, is diminished. I
As the top of the rail flange lisinclined, andthe key 17 moves horizontally, it will be seen that the further the key is driven .inward over the flange, the tighter will be its grip. j
At its outer end the key 17 has a notch that provides a fork 20,
a notch 2l in the outer edge of the base through such notches will anchorV the key in rail-flange clamping position,. and the sides of the fork or notch engaging the sides of the spike, movement of the key in the directionof the rail length will be prevented.
The base edges by a longitudinal rib 22, on each edge, that reaches between the lugs 14, and the top plate lies between the ribs 22.
As shown in Fig. 4, the key 170 and its guide ribs 160, may extend parallel with the rail, and in that case, the rail-engaging nose 190, extends at right angles from Ehe body of the key to overhang the rail ange.
Opposite the guideway of key 17, and alining therewith, is a guide formed of a transversely extending slot 23, and opposite which alines with the base 25,
