Re it known that l, litteram; BAXTER, a citizen of the Unitec States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe anc State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cribs, of which the following is a specification.

rlhe present invention relates tov cribs and more particularly to the type in which a mattress supporting frame is adapted to be supported in a plurality of different horizontal positions, an object of this invention being to provide an improved upper vf rosi supporting means which will be in pensive to manufacture, simple to operate, and strong and durable in use. A further, object of the invention is to rovide a construction of simple. operation which will permit the folding of the mattress supporting frame in parallel relation with the side walls of a crib in which the side wallsA are movable toward each otherfor the purpose of folding the crib.

To these and other ends, the invention i f certain parts and combina-tions all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended el` in the drawings:

Referring more particularly to the einbodimentof the invention herein illustrated, 1 and indicate two sides which are connected by end walls adapted to permit the sides 1 and 2 to fold toward each other in parallel relation. These end Walls, in this instance, each embody ri i section and two hinged sections e and 5 the hinged section s being hinged at 6 to the rigid section 3 to fold inwardly and the hinged section 5 being hinged at 7 to the hinge section il and at 8 to,` the side wall 2. By this arrangement, when the end walls fold inwardly, space is provided between the sections if and the side wall 1 for the reception of the mattress and the mattress supporting frame. i

The crib has a mattress supporting frame or member 9 which is adapted to be supported in two horizontal positions. `rllhe lower position supporting means, in this instance, embodies a horizontal pleo@ olf side rail 10 and a horizontal piece or side rail 11, the horizontal piece or rail 10- connecting the rigid pieces 3 and the horizontal piece or rail 11 projecting inwardly from the side wall 2 in a plane with the horizontal'piece or rail 10. rilhe mattress supporting fra-me 9 rests on these two pieces or rails when in its lowered position. The piece or rail 1Q is of su'icient width to permit the mattress supporting frame with the mattress 12 to be swung thereon as a pivot to the position shown in 5 in parallel relation with the side walls 1 and 2.,' a retaining lip 13 being provided at the edge of the piece 10 to prevent the mattress supporting frame slipping off the piece 10 in s uch turning or swinging movement. i

This lower position supporting means permit-s the mattress supporting frame, in adc ition to being swung thereon. to be removed upwardly therefrom to an upper horizontal position. In order to support the mattress support in this upper horizontal position, two supporting members 1liare provided, each, in this instance, formed of wire rod bent into i) shaped form and pivotally connected to the mattress supporting frame near one end thereof. The pivoting is effected by turning one end of the U shaped member inwardly at 15 and providing alateral eX- tendinfr lug 16 on the other member, both of these pivots being secured in friction bearings formed by friction producing material such as a leather piece 17 and a bearing` plate 1S secured by screws 19 passed through the bearing plate and the friction producing material 17.

In order that each support 14 may be operated from a point above the mattress supporting frame, each U shaped member has at one end an extension 20, which is deflected inwardly from the adjacent end of the frame and has a grip piece 2l in the free end of said extension. This extension operates in a recess or notch 22 formed in the frame 9 adjacent said extension and the inner wall 23 of this notch serves to limit the outward swinging of the frame ofthe support lst. The deflection permits the piece 2l to lie above the frame 9, while the support la is lying in parallel relation with the frame 9, as illustrated in Fig. 6.

In the use of the invent-ion, the mattress supporting frame, when in lower position rests upon the vlower position supporting means lOYaiid l1. Should it be desired to fold the crib, the mattress supporting frame is swung on the piece l0, as fulcruin, to the position shown in Fig. 5, after which the end walls are folded inwardly in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Should it be desired to raise the mattress supporting frame while the crib is expanded, one end of said lframe is elevated and the handle 21 is operated to swing one of the upper position supporting members ll outwardly atits lower edge. Thereafter the other end of the mattress supporting` frame is elevated and the lower edge of the other upper position supporting member is swung outwardly so that the parts finally assume the positions shown in Fig. l. The friction bearings for the upper position supporting members hold the latter against the under sides of the mattress supporting frame until they are shifted by the handles 2l. This makes it possible to swing the mattress supporting frame to an upright position, as shown in Fig. '5, without the upper position supporting meinbers swinging on their pivots. The lowering of the mattress supporting frame is effected by reversing the operations which were necessary to move said mattress supporting frame to its upper supporting posilprovided for the mattress supporting frame, this upper position supporting means permitting the mattress supporting frame to be folded in parallel relation with the side walls. The upper position supporting ineinbeis are operable from above the mattress supporting frame and maintain their positions parallel with the bottom of the frame until shifted manually, so that they do not fall away from the frame when said frame is moved into parallel relation with the side Walls.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A crib comprising side walls, end walls connecting said side walls and foldable to permit the side walls to move together in parallel relation, a mattress supportingr frame, lower position supporting rails for said mattress supporting frame, and upper position supporting means embodying two U shaped members, each `having its arms pivoted to the mattress supporting frame and adapted to rest on said lower position supporting rails to sustain the mattress supporting frame in an elevated position, said members having operating extensions project-ing above the mattress supporting frame, and the mattress supporting frame having recesses through which said extensions project, one wall of each of said recesses acting as a stop for engagement by an extension to limit the outward movement of t-he U shaped member on said support frame.
