BINDER.
Application.jiled May 2,1925,` `SerialV No. 27,470.
To @ZZ wkomc'zf may conce/m:
Be it known vthat vI,- ,Josnrn A. REYNonDs, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Walla Walla, ,in the xcounty of TWalla lTalla and State of Vashington, have invented certain new :and useful-linprovements in Binders, of which the Yfollowing is aspecilication, reference being had to the accom-- panying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in binders and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed foruse in connection with photograph albums and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide binder of this kind constructed in a manner whereby it may be readily adjusted for use in connection with albums or the like of various sizes and which permits a ready turning of the leaves without bending the same,
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved binder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device. rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference tothe accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in top plan of a binder constructed in accordance with an embodiinv it of my invention and in applied position. the coacting alb-um covers being shown in fragment;
Fi. ire 2` is a view in bottom plan of the ire illustrated in Figure l:
L is a view partly in plan and partly in section of my improved binder unapulied';
Figure 4 is a sectional viewtaken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure l, album leaves being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved binder comprises two arcuate members l each substantially semicircular in form and having its extremities continued by the parallel reduced shanks 2. The shanks 2 are` of desired length and have threaded .engagement vthere-Withl the @101.1- i
.L ted sleeves .3 ,which are adapted to be .enten-.ded t lengthen y.the sharks .2 as .the I9- .qnireinents .of practice may ynecessitatel.` rlhe outer-,ends -Qf 'the lsleeves 3 are closed b,and provided .with .the ent-Standing Snaoal'iears 4 between which are adapted to lbe received the reduced shanks extending outwardly from the ends of a cross member 6. The outer ends of the shanks 5 are provided with the enlargements or heads 7 the ears 4 snugly fitting between said enlargements or heads 7 and the ends of the cross members 6. After the cross members 6 have been properly engaged with the sleeves', a screw 8 or the like is engaged with the ears 4 outwardly of the shanks 5 but closely adjacent thereto whereby the cross members 6 are effectively held to the sleeves 3.
One of the cross members 6 is provided adjacent its opposite ends with the elongated parallel rods 9 which telescopically engage with the parallel tubular rods 10' carried by the opposite end portions of the second vcross membe-r 6. This coaction between the rods 9 and l() permits the device to be longitudinally adjusted in accordance with the size of the album with which my improved binder is to be employed. The
outer or free end portions of the rods l0 are tied or connected by an interposed brace member ll which may be fanciful in character or otherwise.
In practice, the sleeves 3 and the shanks 2 are disposed through the suitably positioned openings in the backand leaves of an album or the like and the arcuate members l permit the leaves to be readily turned without bending. rlhe adjustment of the sleeves 3 permits the use of the binder in connection with albums or the like of material thicknesses while the telescopic connections between the rods 9 and l() permit the device to be used with albums or the like of various sizes.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a binder constructed in'accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and ope-rated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptibleof some change and modiiication without departing' from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice eX- cept as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A binder of the class described comprising a pair of arcuate members the extremities of each being continued by substantially parallel shanks, sleeves threaded upon lsaid Shanks, cross members, means for engaging the cross members with the outer end portions of the sleeves, and telescoping rods carried by the cross members.
2. A binder of the class described comprising a pair of arcuate members, the eX- tremities of each being continued by substantially parallel Shanks, sleeves threaded upon said Shanks, the outer ends of the sleeves being provided with spaced ears,
cross members having` shanks extending between said ears, the outer ends of the Shanks being provided with enlargements, the ears of the sleeves snugly engaging `.between said enlargements and the ends of the cross members, means for holding the shanks between JOSEPH A. REYNOLDS.
