Be it known that I, THOMAS F. BIsHoP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stoker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stoke r for. use in connection with furnaces having inclined shaking grates, one of the objects being to provide a hand operated stoker the feed hopper of which can be mounted to swing on the door hin es of the furnace so that access can be ha to the interior of the furnace through the door opening without necessitating the dismantling of the apparatus.
Another object is to provide stoking mechanism adapted to be operated by the shaker lever or levers of the furnace, the parts being adjustable to control the amount of fuel fed to the furnace during each stroke of the feeding ram.
With the foregoing and otherobjects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without de-- parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates hinges upon the front plate of a furnace, and mounted to swing on these hinges is a hopper 2 having a bottom 3 inclined downwardly toward the lower edge of the opening 4 in the plate 5. The inclined grate bars have been shown at 6 and include rocker members 7 adapted to be rocked by shaker bars 8 connected thereto in any well known manner and ex tending through the plate 5. Brackets. 9 are mounted on the plate 5' and fulcrumed on each of them is a shaker lever 10 connected, as at 11, to one of the bars 8.
The inclined bottom 3 of the hopper is slotted longitudinally, as shown at 12, to receive an ear 13 extending downwardly from the bottom of a ram 14 mounted to reciprocate upon the bottom of the hopper. This ram has a longitudinal series of apertures .in the bottom thereof whereby the car 13 can be adjustably connected to the ram, the said apertures being shown at 15. The ram extends throughout the width of the hopper and is overhung by an apron ;16 inclined downwardly and inwardly from the front wall of the hopper.
Pivotally connected to the ear 13 is a link 17 extending toward a pair of parallel oppositely extending levers 18 and 19, These levers are connected by links 20 so as form the sides of a parallelogram, three of the links being preferably employed, and the link 17 is connected to one of the levers at the point where the intermediate links 20 are attached to said lever. A forked block 21 is pivotally attached to the outer end of each lever 18 and 19 and has astud 22 projecting therefrom. These studs engage the upper ends of levers 23 fulcrumed between their ends upon brackets 24, as shown at 25 and the lower ends of said levers are connected by links 26 to the adjacent levers 10 below their points of connection with the bars 8.
Anti-friction rollers 27 may be connected to the ram 14 so as to travel on the bottom of the hopper and cause the ram. to work freely.
The hopper 2 is adapted to be held in active position by a button 28 and when it is thus located fuel can be placed in the hopper and a portion thereof will gravitate to position back of .the ram 14. Thus when one of the levers 10 is oscillated, movement will be transmitted therefrom through the levers and linksto the ram and said ram will be reciprocated so .as to feed fuel to the furnace while the grate is being shaken.
By providing the arrangement of connected levers 18 and 19 the pro er actuation of the ram is insured whether it is 0 rated by the oscillation of either or both 0 the levers .10. These levers and their connections rovide a parallelogram which compensates or any variation in the distance between the upper ends of the levers 23 during separate actuation thereof and, at the same time, affords a strong connection between said levers and the ram 14. It is to be understood that the connection between the links 17 and the car 13 is sufficiently loose to permit the movement of lever 18 as described. It will also be understood that when one of the levers 10 is actuated to move the ram, the other lever 10 is held stationary in any suitable manner, as is well understood in this art. By detaching the ear 13 from the link 17 and turning the button 28, the hopper can be swung on its hinge to expose the opening 4 and give access to the interior of the furnace through said opening.
Obviously instead of mounting the up standing levers upon intermediate pivots, as shown at 25, levers 29, such as shown in Figure 4 can be used. These levers are fulcrumed at their upper ends on brackets 30, their lower ends being connected to levers 10 by links 32 while the studs 22 engage intermediate portions of the levers 29.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a furnace having a feed opening, separate grate actuating levers, and a fuel feeding ram, of levers having lapping inner end portions, and links connecting said portions to form a parallelogram for transmitting motion from either grate actuating lever to the ram, and means connecting the grate actuating levers with the levers of the parallelogram, respectively.
2. The combination with a furnace having a feed opening and separate grate ac tuating levers, of a fuel feeding ram, levers having lappin inner end portions, links connecting sai portions to form a parallelogram, a connection between the parallelogram and the ram, and separate connections between the levers of the parallelogram and the respective ate actuating levers for actuating the para lelogram and ram from either grate actuating lever. V
3. The combination with a furnace having a feed opening, a fuel feeding ram movable mounted ad acent the opening, levers having lapping inner end portions, and links connecting said portions to form a parallelogram, of a movable connection between the parallelogram and the ram, grate actuating levers, and operating connections between the grateactuating levers and the respective lapping levers.
4. The combination with a furnace having a feed opening, a hopper hingedly mounted, and a fuel feeding ram movably mounted in the hopper, of means for actuating the ram, said means including movably connected levers, a movable connection between the levers and the ram, separate grate actuating levers, upstanding levers connected to and actuated by the grate actuating levers respectively, and connections between said upstanding levers and the movably connected levers.
