COMBINATION TOOL.
Application filed June 2,
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that Gnoncn WV. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Waynesville, in the county of Haywood and State of North Carolina, has invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Iools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide in one tool, essentially all the elements necessary to the use of a carpenter in laying off work of various kinds and to make the construction simple so that the device may be cheaply and quickly manufactured.
With this object in View the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings but which does not define the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the invention with the parts in the extended position.
Figure 2 is a similar View with the parts in the collapsed position and the front face removed.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
i igure 4 is a section on the line 1- of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1. I t
The invention is designed for making various linear measurements and to this end the stock or body portion, which consists of the spaced housings 1 and 2 defining an intervening slot carries in the section 1 the elements of a rule which consist of the telescoping sections 8 which, when in collapsed position, are'all housed within the section 1 and which, when extended, are prevented from separation lugs 3 formed at the end of one section and engaging shoulders & in the extremity of the section in which it telescopes. The shoulders and lugs will obviously prevent extension of the section beyond the desired point and the several sections are suitably graduated for conven tional linear measurements.
The housing 2- carries the calipers of which the legs 5 slide through guide eyes 6 formed in the end wall of the housing 2, the legs of the calipers having pivotal connections 7 with a slide 8 movable longitudinally in the housing and engaged by a 1923. Serial no. 642,989.
clamping screw 9 the shank of which passes through a longitudinal slot 10 formed in the front wall of the housing. Obviously when the clamping screw is loose it -may be used as a handle to advance or withdraw the slide toward and from the end wall of the housing and thus cause the legs of the calipers to protrude,-the extent of'their separation being. determined by the position of the slide in the housing. Obviously its position nearer the end wall through which the legs project will result in a wider separation of the legs than a position farther back from the end of said wall. lVhen the desired separation of the legs has been effected by the proper position of the slide in the housing, the simple tightening of the clamping screw secures the slide in place and thus retains the seating of the calipers, the clamping screw engaging the outer face of the housing and the slide being drawn into firm frictional contact with the inner ace.
-The slot defined by the spacing of the two housings is designed to receive the blade 11 which is pivotally mounted on a shank of the clamping screw 12 passing loosely through one housing and threadingly engaging the other, the shank of the screw spanning the slot between the two housings. The blade may be swung to any position between that of perpendicularity to the stock or into folded position when it is disposed for its full length in the slot, the clamping screw 12 maintaining any desired position of the blade relative to the stock. l'he' device can then be made to function as a square or bevel, depending on the position of the blade with respect to the stock.
The two housings are secured together and held in spaced relation b a tubular housing 13 adapted for the reception of a lead pencil, said tubular housing being provided with a clamping device for securing the pencil let in place therein, the clamping device consisting of an eccentric 15 pivotally mounted between cars 16 and provided with a shank 17 by which it may be readily turned. WVhen the shank is in a position parallel with the housing, the eccentric effects a firm bearing on the pencil and secures it in position in its housing. Swinging the shank back withdraws the eccentric from contact with the pencil and permits its ready removal.
To provide for the use of the device in marking off a line parallel with the edge of the board, a slide 18 is mounted on the blade 11, engaging a lateral bead 19 on the blade andbeing provided with a clamping screw 20' by which it may be secured in fixed position on the blade being capable of sliding movement along the blade when the clamping screw is loose. The housing 13 besides serving as an element in which the pencil may be retained when not in use,
alsoservesas-a means for holding the pencil at thetime of marking oil a parallel line as above-described. In such a case the point ofth'e pencil is advanced beyond that edge of -the-blade having thebead and the slide l 8'is set the d'esireddistance from the pencil point, this slide acting asa-guide to follow the edge of the board while the device 20 is being moved along the same the pencil the while drawing a line a fixed distance from the edge.
.Ha'ving described the invention, What is claimed as neW and useful is A device for the purpose indicated comprising a stock provided with a longitudinal slot in one edge portion, a blade pivottally connected with the stock at one end thereof and capable of any position between that of perpendicularity to the stockand folded position Within the slot, a slide mounted on the blade, and a pencil holder carried by the stock on the edge opposite the slot, means being provided for holding the pencil with the point advanced beyond the edge of the blade when the latter is perpendicular to the slot. 7
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature.
GEORGE W. MILLER.
