Description

June 30, 1925.
' w. F. WILSON DI TCHING PLOW Filed Sept. 2. 1924 A INVENTOR. W i? M17802) Patented June 30, 1925,
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. WILSON, OF TIETON', WASHINGTON.
DITCHING PLOW.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. WiLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tieton, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in ditching plows, and more particularly to an improvement in the construction of the plow blade proper.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a ditching shovel or plow, a plow blade in which the cutting edges are directed toward the earth at the sides and bottom of the ditch in all instances, and in which the spreading of the earth is not begun until the earth has been moved upwardly to a point above the ground level.
A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and cheaply produced with a single sheet of metal.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a ditching plow shovel constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure .3 is a longitudinalsectional view therethrough Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the shovel comprises a body portion 10 which is concaved and has at its lower end a point 11 which is arranged at an obtuse angle to the general plane of the body portion and which is flat. At the upper end of the body portion spreading lobes 12 are provided, in the present instance shown as two in number. These lobes are concaved and incline rearwardly and outwardly from the axis of the body portion, so that earth is delivered to one side or the other of the formed ditch. The side edges of the body portion 10, indicated at 13, and
2, 1924. Serial No. 735,377.
the forwardly disposed edges of the point 11, indicated at 14, are sharpened as shown, so that sharp cutting edges are in all instances provided for engagement with the ground both at the sides and bottom of the ditch insuring a proper severing of the sod and a clean cut. It will, of course, be understood that the upper end of the body portion, indicated at 15, or the point of juncture of this body portion with the lobes 12 will represent the greatest depth to which the body of the plow will be engaged in the earth and the blade is preferably secured to the blade shank 16 in such manner that the plow is submerged to this oint.
In the present instance I have shown the blade as formed from a heart-shaped sheet of metal, the point being formed from the lower lobe and the earth distributing lobes 12 being formed from the upper lobes of the sheet.
I claim 1. A ditching plow blade comprising a concaved upwardly and rearwardly inclining body portion having its concaved surface forwardly directed and a horizontally disposed point integral with the body portion and having its forward edges formed by continuation of the side edges of the body portion. the side edges of the body portion and the forward edges of the point being sharpened, the upper portion of the body formed to provide earth spreading lobes directing earth received from the body to opposite sides of the ditch, each of said lobes having its forward face concaved and eXtending-rearwardly and outwardly from the body portion.
2. A plow blade comprising a heartshaped sheet of metal having the body portion thereof concaved and the lower lobe thereof bent forwardly to provide a plow point at an obtuse angle to the general plane of the body, said plow point being flat and the edges of the point being sharpened, the upper lobes of the sheet being bent rearwardly and-outwardly from the body portion and having their forward faces concaved to provide earth distributing lobes.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature.
WILLIAM F. WILSON.
