The base 1 maybe of any suitable structure and carries the ordinary barrel or cylinder 2 having a cap 3 through which reciprocally extends the stem 4 carrying the compression member or pistonV 5 disposed within the bore of the barrel. The piston 5 is capable of a slight movement longitudinally of the stem 4. `This slight relative movement is Y seating the valve face 6 formed on the lower end of the stem 4, upon the seat/7 formed on the piston. The piston comprises the sleeve 8 having an axial bore into which stem 4 extends, and from which the stem is premeans-of a pin 9 carried by the sleeve and extending into the annular groove 10- formed. upon the lower end of the stein 4. The sleeve has formed in it a transversely extending bore 1l that communicates -with the conical bore 12 formedat the upper end of the screw pl'ug 13 carried by the lower end of the Sleeve for l inflating vehicle. .t ires andf employed for seating and un- 8. YThe screw plug has an axial borea- 14communicatingwith the conical bore 12,

Thanlavementof(V the 'platew2Q rela-:2. tivelyT to :the-gzblock;V 19; is slight, wherefore the plate 2O is at all Vtimes suQbstantially coaxial with the barrel and the piston. A i
.n In devices heretofore employed, it was practically impossible to secure a sealing contact of the flexible washer upon the inner face of the barrel because when the piston was inserted in the barrel there was no way in which flutes in the flexible washer could be eliminated, wherefore air undergoing compression would escape upwardly past the piston. When employing my device, the contact` of the flexible washer upon the yielding or sliding plate 22 serves to positively carry the flexible washer' outwardly throughout its entire circumference thereby effecting anula-r contact of the flexible washer upon the cylinder wall. rlhe development of the tapered lower edge on the washer 17 makes this lower edge very flexible, wherefore the y compression below the piston serves to augment the seal of the flexible washer upon the barrel because this compression force tends to push such highly flexible lower end of the washer tightly against the barrel, thereby precluding loss of compression between the barrel and the flexible washer. rlhe capacity for slight relative movement of the slidy ing plate 20 permits the conical face 28 of the plate 22 to automatically center itself withinthe tapered inner face 27 of the flexible washer at the end of each down stroke of the piston. This centering` action is rendered very gentle by reason of the compression present below the piston as the flexible washer reaches the bottom of its stroke and thus eliminates the undue wear and premature destruction which is present in fixed and rigid washer conditioning means which are known to the applicant.
lllhat I claim is:
l. In a device of the class described the combination of a barrel, a reciprocating pis-v ton in the barrel comprising a flexible wash- Athe base,
er, and a sliding plate at the base of the barrel for engagement with t-he inner face of the flexible washer for effecting positive annular seating of the washer upon the barrel.
2. In a device of the class described the combination with a pump comprising a barrel. and a reciprocating piston in the barrel having a flexible washer, of self-centering means within the barrel for engagement upon the inner face of the washer and for effecting positive annular contact of the outer face of thel washer upon the barrel.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a barrel, a stem reciprocally contained in the barrel, a sleeve mounted on the stern for limited movement longitudinally of the stem and carrying a flexible washer dividing the barrel into a pair of chambers, and a valve and valve seat associated with the stem and the sleeve for utilizing the relative movement of the stem and the sleeve for controlling communication between the chambers on opposite sides of the washer, and slidable means for positively effecting annular contact of the flexible washer upon the wall of the barrel.
4l. In a device of the class described the combination of a base, a barrel carried by a plate substantially co-axial with the barrel carried by the base and capable of a limited movement radially of the barrel and .a piston reciprocally Vcontained in the barrel comprising a flexible washer for engagement upon the sliding plate for effecting' annular contact of the flexible washer upon the barrel wall.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th Vday of March,
THEODORE E. REYNOLDS.
