BENJAMIN L. ROBINSON, OF FLORENCE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES FOR HAV, COTTON, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,191 dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. L. ROBINSON, of Florence, county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my improvement relates to an improvement in beater-presses, used for baling cotton, hay, and other articles; and consists in the arrangement and combination of parts which will be more fully set forth hereafter.
Figure l is a side elevation of my press. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
a represents the body of the press, of any suitable size or form, provided with suitable doors upon its top for inserting the material to be baled in front of the plunger, and removing it after it is `baled. The plunger c, provided with suitable friction-rollers, is connected to the jointed levers d e, upon which a heavy weight, g, is placed for forcing the plunger against the material being baled after it has been drawn back by the operating power. Secured to the levers d, and passing up over the standard z', is a cord or' chain, h, by which the plunger is operated. The outer end of this cord is tied to a semicircular metal plate, Z, having a projection extending out from its side, and which moves around the capstan n, while held in position ingrooves made in the head and base of the same. Secured to the top of the capstan is the sweep o, to which the motive power is applied, having 4 a pivoted latch,r,hanging from its under side,
which, as the sweep moves around, catches against the projection s, drawing the semicircular plate to which the rope is attached around with it. As the plate moves around it exerts its pull upon the rope and raises the weight and levers `upward, drawing the plunger back for another stroke against the bale, until the catch arrives at the tripping device t, when it is released from the projection, and the weight immediately falls, driving the plunger against the bale. As soon as the catch passes the tripping device it catches against the projection again, and thus for every turn of the sweep and capstan the plunger is driven against the bale. Upon topof the capstan is pivoted a lever, u, having its outer end attached to the catch by a cord, c, so that the plunger can be tripped before the capstan has made a full turn, if ,so desired. Under the capstan, but independent of it, is placed a drum, w, having notches or recesses made around its top, in which a rod, a', secured to the end of the lever u catches, so as to cause it to revolve with the sweep. By raising the outer end of the lever the catch r is drawn outward so as to prevent its engaging with the projection s and operating the plunger, while the rod a is depressed `so as to catch the drum, which, as the capstan revolves, turns with it. Fastened to this drum is a cord or chain, c', which is secured to the levers d, for the purpose of drawing them down, so as to hold the plunger braced rigidly against the bale while it is being finished.
The head of the press has two notched arms, e', extending outward from its rear side, which pass through a cross brace or beam, i', having a groove in its side in which slides a locking device, of any suitable kind, for catching in the notches and holding the head in any desired position.
By means of these devices the thickness and size of the bale may be regulated at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The head, having the notched arms e', in combination with a suitable locking device, for regulating the size of the bale, as described.
2. The plunger c, levers d c, and weight g, in combination with an automatic operating and tripping device, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto afix my signature this 25th day of March, 1873.
E. L. ROBINSON.
