COMBINATION IRONING BOARD AND SERVING TABLE.

Be'it known that I, ALoYsIUs I. FRIEL, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Combination Ironing Board and Serving Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to kitchen equipment and has more especial relation to a combination closet or cabinet concealing a plurality of household utilities.

The leading object of the present invention is to provide a simple, compact, efiicient and comparatively inexpensive closet or cabinet which may-readily and quickly be converted into an ironing board, a relatively large serving table or a relatively small serving or like table. Other and further objects reside in the provision of a novel combination, connection and arrangement of parts for attaining leading object.

The invention'consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawin s one form thereof which is at resent preferred by me, since the same has can the results sought by said taken upon the is a view in section taken' upon the found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a closet of any suitable material, usually wood, painted to match surrounding wood-work in a kitchen or other place. The upper part of the closet may have a shelf to accommodate irons and is provided with a door 2. Hinged at 3 to the closet front immediately below the door 2 is an upwardly and outwardly opening cover 4 of U-shape, a catch 5 being present to maintain the cover closed. Within the closet, upon the side walls thereof are located inclined, grooved ways 6 each of which terminates at the upper end in an outwardly extended, horizontal way 7. Adapted to track in said ways 6 are the studs 8 of an ironing board 9 when the latter is being shifted to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Having nested relation with the U-shaped cover 4 is an ironing board support 10, which latter has hinged relation at 11 with the ironing board, the latter having a double link connection 12-13 with the support 10. The links have pivotal relation with one another 'at 14, link 12 has pivotal relation with ironing board, link 13 has pivotal relation with the support lO and the links in extended position, as in Figs. 5 and 7 are so maintainedby stop 15. The bottom rail of the front cover 1s provided with vertical pins 16 and the lower edge of support 10 1s provided with apertures 17 whereby the said support 10 has removable relation with respect to said cover when and if desired, for instance as shown in Fig. 2. The "device is capable of use in three different ways, namely, as an ironin board, as a serving table of relatively arge size, and as a serving table of relativelysmall size. These different uses will now be described in the-order stated.

(A) To use the device as an ironin board, door 2 is opened, support 10 is raise up from pins 16', the ironing board 9 moved up along ways 6 until the studs 8 reach ways 7 whereupon the ironing board is pulled forward so that studs 8 drop in notches 18. The support 10 meanwhile has departing m the or. scop'eof the inbeen moved to vertical position as shown in Fig. 2, the links 12-13 and stop 15 serving to race the parts. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the support 10 is provided with members 19 which engage stops 20 on cover 4 to prevent accidental upward movement of support 10 and to prevent inward movement of said support. By moving support 10 very slightly in an outward direction adjacent its top, the parts 19 are freed of parts 20 so that the support may be lifted free of pins 16. If the apertures 17 have a loose enough fit with respect to pins 16 the pins may be used as a pivot about which the support 10 may be moved downwardly and outwardly, the ironing board meanwhile assuming a horizontal position. ,When so employed of course the links 12-13 merely move about their pivot points and do not become extended.

(B) When the device is used as a relatively large serving table it is merely necessary to loosen catch 5 and move cover 4 outwardly and upwardl about its hinged connection 3 to the position shown in Fig. 7, whereupon links l213 and stop 15 cooperate to retain the combined cover 4 and support 10 in horizontal position, it being understood that the studs 8 of the ironing board remain at the bottom. of ways 6 and act as a pivot point for the said ironing board.

(C) If it is desired to use the device as a relatively small serving table or the like, the support 10 is lifted free of pins 16 as before described and moved outwardly and upwardly it being understood that cover 4 in this case is not moved. When the support 10 is in horizontal position the links 12 13 and stop 15 have assumed the position shown in Fig. 5. By moving a pivot bar 21, see Fig. 3, downwardly in front of the upper part of the ironing board the latter is prevented from tilting forward. The pivot bar 21 is normally retained in vertical position by a catch 22, see Fig. 3.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satis factory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modificationin various particulars without vention or sacrificing any of its advantages. What I claim is 1. In an article of the character stated, the combination of a closet having a cover hinged midway of its heighth to open outwardly and upwardly, said cover being U- shaped and having a lower rail, means to secure the lower end of said cover to the closet an ironing board support movably secured to the lower rail of said cover and having nested relation with said U-shaped mem her, an ironing board within the closet, said support being pivoted at its top to said. ironing board and means within said closet for guiding said ironing board to horizontal position during outward movement of said support.

2. In an article of the character stated, the combination of a closet having a cover hinged midway of its heighth to 0 en outwardly and upwardly, said cover I ing U- shaped and having a lower rail, means to secure the lower end of said cover to the closet an ironing board sup ort movably secured to the lower rail of said cover and having nested relation with said U-shaped member, an ironing board within the closet, said support being pivoted at its top to said ironing board, means within said closet for guiding said ironing board to horizontal position during outward movement of said support and means operatively connected between said ironing board and said ironing board support for maintaining said cover including said support in horizontal position when said cover is moved outwardly about its hinged connection.

3. In an article of the character stated, the combination of a closet having a cover hinged midway of its height, said cover being U-shaped and having a lower rail, means to secure the lower end of said cover to the closet, an ironing board support re movably secured to the lower rail of said cover and having nested relation with said U-shaped cover, an ironing board within the closet, means for hinging the up er end of said support to the ironing ard' and means including links connecting the lower end of said support to the ironingboard and meanswithin the closet for maintaining the ironing board in vertical position when the said support ismoved outwardly to horizontal position.
