BOTTLE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT CULP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willoughby, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to a box or other receptacle adapted to be attached in such a place preferably in front of a .dwelling as to be readily accessible to a milk man or other deliverer of wet goods.

The construction of the receptacle is such that a reversed empty bottle placed therein will prevent the cover of the receptacle from being closed while said cover can be readily closed when a filled bottle is placed right end up in said receptacle.

The means by which I am enabled to accomplish this purpose is an inverted chamber in the cover of the receptacle into which the neck of a bottle can project when the receptacle cover is closed, but which recess is not large enough to receive the bottom end of such a bottle.

These and other features of my invention will appear hereinafter, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows,

Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved bottle receptacle having a bottle placed therein as indicated by broken lines.

Figure 2 is a like view of my improved bottle receptacle having a bottle placed therein in inverted position as indicated by broken lines.

Figure 4 is an end view of a bottle receptacle showing a modified construction thereof.

In these drawings A indicates a rectangular box having an angular open upper end B, 59 which open end is provided with a cover G which is hinged to the box A by means of Serial No. 713,261.

The cover C is provided in the intermediate portion thereof with; an inverted recess D preferably pressed therein into which the neck of a bottle, shown by broken lines in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3, can project when the cover C is closed down, but which recess D is not large enough to receive the lower end of the bottle E as shown in Fig. 2, so that the cover C will rest upon the bottle E when said bottle is inverted and placed in the box A. i

The inverted recess D in the cover C is preferably elongated so as to receive the necks of two bottles placed in the box A as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 3. The box A is provided with an ordinary spring lock placed 011 the inner side of the front wall of said box so as to project between the two bottles as indicated by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The cover C is provided with a latch C which is adapted to enter the spring lock and thereby secure the cover 0 in its closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

In Figure 4, I show a modified construction of my improved box in which the cover 0 is'flat instead of inclined, as in Figs. 1, 2

and 3, said cover C being provided with an inverted recess D adapted to receive the neck of a bottle as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4, which projects above the upper end of the box A.

In operation the customer places in the empty box A an empty bottle, inverted, as shown in Fig. 2. The milk man takes the empty bottle out and replaces the same with a filled bottle, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4 and allows the cover C to fall down into place which is securely locked in closed position by means of the spring lock of usual construction.

The customer can of course open the box by means of a key in the usual manner. It will be obvious therefore, that the cover is retained in an unlocked position by means of the inverted bottle, so that the deliverer of filled bottles does not require a key to open the box in order to deposit a filled bottle therein, or to lock the box after depositing such filled bottle.
