To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, Ron SHER A a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention Apportaining to a Shingle-Holding Meansgand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to roofing construction, and particularly. to a looking or securing means for the exposed ends of shingles of a flexible nature, such for in stance, as what are commonly known as asphalt shingles.
In the laying of certain types of shingles of this character it is customary to place their edges at an angle to a,horizontal, with the lower points thereof lapping the adjacent side poi-nts of adjoining shingles, and the upper point portion of another shingle, or, in other words, the shingles are laid in diamond form. 'lVith this arrangement the lower exposed pointed portions of the top shingles, unless locked or secured down in some manner, will be lifted up by the wind and permit rain and snow to beat thereunder.
The object of this invention is to provide simple, efficient and inexpensive means for firmly securing an exposed shingle point in place, and which is capable of easy and quick application.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred eminent thereof is illustrated in the acconr panying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan of a fragmentary section of a shingle covering for a roof embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates each of a plurality of shingles of a roof, which shingles are of a pliant or flexible nature and of rectangular form, substantially square in the present instance, and have one corner cut off at 2 to form a likeangle with each of the adjoining or intersecting sides. The purpose of my invention is to hold the lower exposed chamfered corners of the shingles down to the roof when the shingles are laid in'what may be termed diamond form or with their edges diagonally disposed with respect to a horizontal. In laying the shingles in this manner, each pair of side adjoining shingles, for instance, a and Z), have their adjacent pointed side corners meeting at a point e in lapping relation over the upper side edge portions of asubjacent shingle d, and a shingle c of the next row in order is positioned with its center over the point 0, with its lower side edges lapping the adjacent side edges of the shingles a. and b, and with its lower chamfered edge 2 extending below the point 0 and disposed in'a horizontal plane. hen the next row of shingles has been placed over the row of shingles e in alternating relation thereto it is apparent that the lower chamfered end portion of the shingles 6 will be exposed to the weather and subject to being raised by wind pressure thereunder.
To prevent such raising of the lower exposed end portions of the shingles I provide a thin plate or cross-member 8, which is adapted to lap the adjoining side corners of adjacent shingles of a row over a point 0 and has perforations 4 therein near its ends to receive retaining nails, which are intended to be driven through the plate 3 and the subjacent portions of the'shingles, a, Z) and (Z over which it is disposed, and then into the roof sheathing, or into the old shingles on the roof if the new shinglesare laid thereover, as is frequently done. The plate 3 is provided at its central portion with an upstanding stud or stem 5 of a bendable naturerwhich is intended to be projected up through a registering aperture 6 in the exposed lower end portion of a superposed shingle and is then bent over againstthe outer side of such shingle to cooperate with the plate 3 and securing nails 7 to firmly hold or lock the exposed shingle .end to the roof. lVith this locking means it is not necessary to nail the shingles at any other points to the roof, as each shingle has three plates 3 disposed thereover and secured to the roof by four nails 7, as is apparent. It is thus evident that the looking means employed not only provides a reaps for securely locking the free end portion of a shingle against raising under Wind pressure, but also effectively secures the shingles to a roof.
I ish it understood thatmy invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes withoutdeparting from the spirit of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, v
In a roof construction having shingles of rectangular construction arranged in such a manner that one shingle overlaps portions of two subjacent shingles, means for holding the shingles together consisting of a fiat metallic strip adapted to be inserted between the upper shingle and subjacent shingles, a central upwardly extending bendable stem on the strip projecting thru said upper shingle and adapted to be bent over upon the upper surface thereof, and downwardly extending elements adjacent the opposite ends of the strip for securing the strip to the subjacent shingles, thereby securely retaining three shingles in assembled relation without the necessity of additional securing means.
