Description
KIMB'ALL RENCH Filed 0 1 29 1923 /Zii- INVENTOR. I mm f? Jfi'mba/J BY ATTORNEY.
Patented May 26, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
IRWIN P. KIMBALL, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed October 29, 1923. Serial No. 671,448.
Be it known that I, IRWIN P. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable open end wrenches and the objects are first, to construct a wrench that is simple in construction; second, to provide an open end wrench wherein the jaws may be easily and quickly adjusted; and third, to construct a wrench that requires a minimum amount of clearance space when turning a nut or simllar parts.
Further objects are to construct a wrench with connected adjustable jaws and a sliding sleeve.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side view of my wrench.
Figure 2 represents a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the sleeve 1 and 1 are secured together, and are provided with suitable hearing surfaces for the bars 3 and 9, the said bars 3 and 9 being positioned at a predetermined angle to one another to provide the required movement of the jaws 4L and 5, and the required angle of rest hereinafter described, the said jaws 4 and 5 being integral with'the end portion of the bars 3 and 9 respectively to form an open end wrench 10, as shown in Figure 1.
The forward outer end of the arm 13 is provided with a slot 1e extending transversely of the bar 9 at a slight angle thereto and the sleeve 1 is provided with a slot 15 extending parallel to the bar 8. A pin 8 secured to the bar 3 projects through the slots 14 and 15. The slot 14: is inclined in the forward and backward direction in which the pin 8 travels therein so that the walls of the slot act as a cam on the pin and facilitate its easy movement through the slot so that the pin will not bind in the slot.
By sliding the sleeve 1-1 forwardly or backwardly on the bars 9 and 3, the engagement of pin 8 with the slots 14- and 15 will cause the jaws 4 and 5 to close and open. whereby the jaws are adjusted to a nut or other object.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In an open-end wrench, two bars arranged at an angle to each other, jaws on one end of said bars respectively, a sleeve through which said bars extend, there being a slot in said sleeve extending parallel to the axis of one of said bars, an arm on the outer bar having a slot extending transversely thereof at a slight angle, and a pin secured'in the other bar and extending through said slots.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
IRIVIN P. KIMBALL.
