UNITED STATES 1,539,233 PATENT OFFICE.
mum o. BEARDSLEY, or
ASSIGNORS TO THE BEABDSLEY & PIPER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A COR- PORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HOLDING MACHINE.
Application filed July 18, 1921. Serial No. 485,506.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELMER 0. Burnsmy and WALTER F. Prrnn,.bothfcitizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of-Illinois, of Cook and have invented certain new and Molding Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description The invention relates to -mlding machines. One object of the present invention is to provide an improved portable molding machine which is mounted on a truck and adapted to be propelled over a floor on which the sand to be used is piled and. which makes provision for-the elevation of the sand and its delivery into a reservoir on the truck from which it can be readily, shovelled into one of the molding machines on the truck,-so that a working supply bf sand will always be available to and within easy reachof the molder,
so he can quickly and easily fill'the flasks.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims atthe conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective of a machine embodying the invention. Fi
2 is a horizontal section.v Fig. 3. is a si e elevation of a portion of the machine. ,Fig.
4; is a vertical section.
. The invention is exemplified. in a machine comprising a orta-ble truck adapted to be propelled ov'er t e floor. of the. molding sand is arranged in. a pile or .wind-row. Each truck com rises a frame built up of sides 5 and tu ular cross-members- 6 and 7 whichare secured 'to :the frame-sides in suitable manner to The truck is movabl form a rigid frame.
sustained by fear carrying wheels 8 whic are cross-connected by a shaft 9 extending through the tubular member 7 and a pair of front carrying wheels 10 suitably jou'rnalled on the frame-sides 5. A supporting base 12, is rigidly secured to the tubular frame-members 6 and7 by U-bolts 13, and
is adapted to support on one-side a moldin machine of the hand-squeezing type 0 usual construction and atits other side a molding machine 14 of the jarring'ty e.
The machine comprims mechanism or conveying and elevating sand from the floor useful Improvements in it will e truck-wheels 8 have toothed perip -A. crank-pin in front of the machine to a receptacle on the truck for use in the molding machines. A cross-shaft 16 is journalled in the framesides 5 and is provided with spiral conveyor blades 17 and 18 which are adapted to disintegrate the sand on the floor and convey it -to a central elevator which com prises. an endless chain 19 and buckets 2Q which are adapted to scoop up the sand fed thereto by the conveyors 17 and 18 and td discharge it, when elevated, into. a chute 21 which delivers the sand into a receptacle 2 which serves as a reservoir for a supply of sand which is always available for molders at the molding machines. Thelower por: tion of the chain 19 passes around a sprocket 25 on conveyor shaft 16 and its upper end passes around a sprocket 25' on a shaft 26 mounted. in bearings 27 on a hollow standard 28 which issecured to the base 12. A discharge opening 23 is formed in the lower'portion of the reservoir 22 through which the sand will fall into a platform 24: which is conveniently located betwen the molding machines and at such an elevation that the molder can easily and. with facility shovel the sand from the platform 24 into the ,fiasks on the molding machines located at the sides thereof. In dischar ing the sand from the buckets 20, further disintegrated so that the reservoir 22 will contain. a supply of sand which is in condition to he placed into the flasks. An electric-motor 29- supported on' the truck drives .the sand-conveying and elevating mechanism through a inion on the motor-shaft, an idler 41 mes in with said pinion and a gear 42 fixed to sali idler and meshing with a car 43 fixed to one end of the conveyor-she t 16.
In order to keep the cross-conveyors supplied with sand, it is necessary to propel the truck over the foundry floor on which the sand is piledand, for this pur ose, the
. eries 33 which mesh with: stationary toothed tracks 34; laid -in the floor and said wheels are driven by power derived from theshaft 16.
35 is secured to one end of shaft 16 and reciprocates a pawl 37 which is adapted to step up a ratchet-wheel 38. A toot ed pinion 39 is fixed to rotate with said ratchet-wheel "and is formed with teeth which conform to and mesh with the teeth 38 of 'one' of the traction-wheels 8.
CHICAGO, AND WALTER F. PIPER, 0F OAK'IARK, ILLINOIS,
A dog 39 engages the ratchet 38 to hold it against retraction. While the screw-conveyors on shaft 16 are operated, the wrist pin willstep up the ratchet 38 tofslowly operate the wheels 8 and cause them to propel the truck over the molding room floor. the cross-conveyors and elevator to be continually supplied with sand for delivery into the reservoir 22 so thatthere will be a constant supply of sand available on the platform 24 from which the molder can readily shovel the sand into the flasks on either of the molding machines.
The invention exemplifies a portable molding machine which is equipped with mechanism for propelling it towards a pile of sand on the floor and which breaks up and elevates the sand and delivers it into a reservoir on the truck. A. constant supply of sand is thus maintained on the platform 24 from which the sand can be easily and quickly shovelled into the flasks in the molding machine or machines on the truck.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. 'In a molding apparatus, the combination of a portable truck adapted to travel on a molding machine floor, means for propelling the truck, a molding machine mounted on the truck, a. reservoir for a working supply of sand fixed on the truck and located relatively to said machine so sand may be conveniently shovelled therefrom into a flask on or in the molding machine, and mechanism for conveying sand from a pile on the floor and delivering it into the reservoir.
This travel of the truck will cause 2. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a portable truck adapted to travel on a molding machine floor, means on the truck for propelling the truck, a molding machine mounted on the truck, a reservoir for a working supply of sand fixed on the truck and located relatively to said machine so that sand may be conveniently shovelled therefrom into a flask on the moldingmachine, and mechanism for conveying sand from a pile on the floor and delivering it into the reservoir comprising an elevator mounted to operate between the sides of the truck. 3. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a portable truck adapted to travel on a molding machine floor, means for propelling the truck, a molding machine mounted on the truck, a reservoir for a working supply of sand fixed on the truck, a platform stationary on the truck onto which the sand falls from said receptacle, and from which sand may be conveniently shovelled into a 'flask on or in the molding machine, and
mechanism for conveying sand'from a pile onpthe floor and delivering it into the reservoir.
4. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a portable truck adapted to travel on a molding machine floor, means for propelling the truck, a molding machine mounted on the truck, a reservoir for a working supply of sand fixed on the truck, a platform on the truck onto which sand will fall from the receptacle and located so that ,sand may be conveniently shovelled therefrom into a flask on or in the molding machine, a cross-conveyor for sand on the floor ofthe molding room, and an elevator centrally disposed on the truck for delivering sand from the conveyor into the reservoir to keep the platform supplied with sand.
