UNITED .sTATE s PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BRANDT, OJZTFORT WAYNE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR 'IO WAYNE TANK AND PUMP COMPANY, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
ILLUMINATED SIG-N FOR DISPENSING APPARATUS.
Application -.fi1ed May 15, 1922. Serial No. 561,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BRANDT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and 5 State of Indiana,-have invented new and useful Improvements in Illuminated Signs for Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to illuminated signs for. dispensing apparatus adapted to be erected Where exposed to the weather as on the side walk or near the curb or on the islands of filling stations.
Such signs ordinarily surmount the dispensing apparatus casing, are made with a glass on each side, lettered, set in a casing usually of metal, and are usually illuminated at night byan electric incandescent bulb within the casing. The glass sides in such devices are frequently broken'by the elements, by stones hurled by hand or slings, by bullets or shot from rifles or air guns, by being accidentally struck by workmen handling metal rods or boards, or by persons colliding with the dispensing apparatus and jarring it.
All these dangers of breakage are completely eliminated by my improvements, which have no glass on the sides or other part of the casing; but are entirely of metal, and therefore strong and durable.
Another object of my invention is to form a pleasing and artistic sign that will u be very simple and cheap to manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sign that will convey the desired information without generally illuminating the surroundings so as to lessen or destroy the effect which would otherwise be produced by the general lighting scheme of the garage or filling station that operates the dispensing apparatus.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the sign displaying element ready for attachment to the light post, and i Figure 2 is an edgewise' elevation of the same, with part of both edges and side rame, broken away and in section.
Referring now to the drawings, A is a sign displaying element, composed of. dish shaped lateral halves A A made of sheet metal, whose edges a, a are interlocked except at the neck a, which is secured, preferably by spot welding, to the base B. The
the light shines at night to convey by this outline the information desired.
Obviously changes could be made in the structure here illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, as by continuing the dish shaped halves so as to form one half of the base integral with each of these halves, and the like; therefore I claim as within the scope of my invention any structure readable upon any of the claims that are finally allowed hereon.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States.
1. A sign structure adapted to enclose a source of light, said structure having in combination two similar dish shaped metal halves, means for interlocking the connecting edges of said halves to form a globe, a supporting base secured to one edge of said globe, an opening thru said base to admit the source of light, and perforations through said metal halves arranged in such manner as to convey the information desired.
' 2. A sign structure adapted to enclose a source of light, said structure having in combination two similar dish shaped metal halves with flat sides disposed substantially at right angles to their edges and integral therewith, said edges interlocked to form from said' halves a globe, a supporting base secured to one edge of said globe, an openmy hand in presence of two subscribing wit ing thru said base thru Which the source of nesses. light extends into said globe, and perforations thru said flattened sides arranged in WILLIAM BEAN i such manner as to convey the information fitnesses:
desired. W ALTER J. HUGHES,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set L. E. BAKER.
