VALVE-OPERATING MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, RIC-HARD H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norton, in the county of Bristol and State of ltlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. i
My invention relates to a device for manually operating globe valves, angle valves, gate valves, and such other types of valves as embody a slidable valve stem.
The essenital objects of my invention are speed in opening and closing the valve; prevention of accidental unseating of the valve even under a maximum pressure; to adapt the device for application to a valve casing located adjacent an obstacle, and enable its operation under such circumstances; to facilitate the interengagement of the valve bonnet or head with the shell of the casing when such portions of the shell are separate and threaded; certainty of action, strength; and simplicity. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description and accompanying drawings) To the QbOVG QlIClS essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such com binations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, illustrating the principle of this invention, and the best mode now known to me of applying this principle,

In the construction illustrated 7 is the shell and 8 the head or bonnet of a globe valve casing 9, provided with the usual partition 10, opening 11, and annular shoulder l2 constituting the valve seat 13. The bonnet or head 8 includes the body 15, sleeve 17, and flange 18 provided i Wi thread 19 engageable with thread 20 on the shell, all as usually constructed. 22 is the gland in threaded engagement withthe portion 1'7. of a valve 25 which in the construction 'illustrated is a-piston. The shape ofthe member 2 5 as well as its corresponding seat is immaterial and is dependent obviously upon the type'of valve and valve casing.
The valve stem 24 has upon its upper end a thread 28 engaging the internal thread 29 in the central opening-3O of a sleeve 31 constituting the lower portion of a head 32 whose upper port-ion consists of spaced parallel vertical ears 34'; integral with the sleeve or shank 31. Fast in the ears is a pivot pin; 3.6 passing loosely through a hole 37 in a 'downwardlycand rearwardly inclined extension or heel 38 upon the inner end portion 39, of a lever 40 terminating in a handle 41 the heel being disposed at an angle to the lever. The head 32 is fastened in adjusted position by a lock nut 43 on the valve stem.
The sleeve portion of the valve casing head8 has a transversely rectangular 'eX ternal groove 44 in which is mounted a split clamping ring 45. In this instance the ring comprises two body sections 46 having upon-their ends ears 47 provided with 'thre'aded perforations 48 to receive clamping screws or bolts '49. By turning the screws the ring may either be, made rigid on the head 8 or may be loosened to move circularly thereon. Each ring section 46 has midway, its length lateral studs 52 in which are threaded pins or pivot members 53 loose in openings 54 in the lower ends of links 56 having enlarged upper portions 58 provided with bores 60 to receive a shaft or pivot member 61 which also passes loosely through a bore or opening 62 in the broad end portion or sleeve 39 of the arm 40. A cross bar 64 connects the links adjacent the valve steni head, 32; The links, cross bar, and shaft 61 constitute a swing ing frame 65. r
The valve 25 is unseated by slightly elevating the lever 40 which destroys the normal vertically aligned relation of the members 61 and 36, and the upper portion of the frame 65 is thus thrown rearwardly, as shown in Figure 3. A reversal of the lever Slidable in the head is the stem 24 movement returns the parts to original p01 sition with the cross piece 64: abutting against the head 32, as shown in Figure 4, whereby the pivotal centers 61 and 86 are prevented from moving far from their vertical relation with each other. The toggle or clamping action described enables the application of excessive power to the valve steam in closing, and hastens the opening of the latter. I
The adjustable character of the ringpermits turning the lever 40 in direction laterally, so thatmy device may be accom- .modated in otherwise inaccessible locations.
Adjustment for wear of the valve is afforded by the threaded engagement of the valve stem 20 in the member 32.

In a valve operating mechanism, a valve casing, a valve stem, a ring on the easing, a vibratory frame attached at itslower end to the ring and movable transversely of the stem, a head on the stem in the path of the frame and adapted to be engaged thereby, a lever pivotally attached to the upper end ofthe frame for vibrating the frame, and a heel upon the lever pivotally supported by the head the pivot of the up per end of the frame and the pivot of the head being relatively movable to and from normal vertically aligned relation.

In a valve operating mechanism, a valve casing, a valve stem, a head on the stem, a ring on the casing concentric with the stem, a frame comprising links pivotally attached at their lower ends to the ring at diametrically opposite points, a cross piece connecting the links adj acent the head. and a pivot pin in the upper portions of the links at a distance from the cross piece, an operating lever pivoted upon the pin between the links, and a heel on the pivoted end of the lever pivotally engaging the head the pivot of theupper portion of the frame and the pivot of the head being relativelv movable to and fromnormal ver- 'tically aligned position.
6. In a valve operating mechanlsin, a valve eas1ng, a valve stem, said casing being provided with an annular recess concentric with the stem, a split clamping ring comprising a body seated in the recess and ears provided with perforations, clamping screws in the perforations, a frame pivotally attached to the ring, and a lever pivoted to the frame and fulcrumed upon the stem the pivotbetween the lever and frame and the pivot of'the stem being relatively movable to and from normal vertically aligned Ii /121131011.
