UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD O. Tm'SLEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ROBEKT GAIR COM- PANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
EASEL CARTON.
Application filed July 1, 1920. Serial No. 393,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. TINSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented/certain new and useful Improvements in Easel Cartons, of which the following is'a specification.-
My present invention relates to an improvement in counter cartons for receiving,
shipping and displaying goods therein.
One object of my invention is to provide a counter carton of the class described formed from a single blank and without the use of glued-up joints or connections.
A principal feature of my invention is the use of double covers, outer and inner, the inner of which when not in covering posi-' tion is arranged to provide a display member for exposing printed or other matter thereon, and the outer of which when not in covering position -is arranged to provide an easel-back or rest for supporting the receptacle portion of the carton in an inclined position for displaying the contents thereof.
Another feature of my invention is the use of double sides, outer and inner, and double ends, outer and inner; the inner sides of the double sides of the receptacle portion providing tensioning means, for the recep taele portion, and the inner ends of the double ends providing locking means for the receptacle portion.
These and other capabilities of the invention will be disclosed in the following description.
In the drawings which form part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carton in closed folded assembled form.
Figure 2 is a perspective .view of the carton in open folded assembled form show: ing the inner cover in display position and the outer cover providing an easel-back or rest for the receptacle portion of the carton. Figure 3 is a detail cross-sectional view on the middle transverse'line of the carton, the carton being in open folded assembled form and the inner cover being in display of the carton in closed folded assembled form.
Figure 5 is a view of the blank from which the carton is formed. V
Figure 6 is a view of the carton in partially folded form. Similar letters or numerals refer tosimilar parts throughout the several views.
Reference being had to Fig. 6, my carton,
providing the which is formed from a. single sheet of suitable material such as cardboard, comprises an outer bottom 10, an inner bottom 11, outer side-forming members 12 and 13, an inner side-forming and tensioning member 14 an inner side-forming member 15, freehanging inner end-forming and locking- tab members 16, 16 and .17, 17 outer end-forming members 18 and 19, inner end-forming members 20 and 21 having tension folds 22 and 23, an inner cover 24:, and an outer cover 25 having a flap 26.
' In length and width the outer and inner bottoms 10 and 11 are the same, this being the desired length and width of the carton, and the inner cover 24 and outer cover 25 are in length and width the same as the outer and inner bottoms. The side-forming members are in length the same as the outer bottom, and. in width are the desired depth of the carton; the outer and inner endforming members are in length the width of the outer bottom and in width are the same as the side-forming members; and the locking-tab members, in each instance, are in combined length, exclusive of the headnotches later mentioned. the width of the outer bottom, and in width are the same as the outer end-forming members. The flap 26 is slightly shorter than the outer cover 25,
and in width suitable for tucking-in purposes.
The outer side-forming member 12 is foldably connected along its lower line to the outer bottom 10; the outer side-forming member 13 is foldably connected along its upper line to the outer bottom 10, the member 13 being shown in Fig. 6 in a substantially normal folded position and the term upper being used relative to its position before folding, and along its lower line is foldand .7, 17 are two-part and are foldably connected at their outer ends to the outer side-forming members 12 and 13, and are provided at their inner ends with interlock ing heads or head-notches 27-27 and 28 28; the outer end-forming members 18 and 19 are foldably connected along their lower line to the outer bottom 10; the inner end forming elements or members 20 and 21 are foldably connected along their lower line to the outer end-forming members 18 and 19; and the tension- folds 22 and 23 are foldably connected along their lower line to the inner end-forming members 20 and 21. The display cover 24 is foldably connected along its upper line to the inner side-formin member 15; the outer cover 25 is foldably connected along its lower line to the outer side-forming member 12 along the upper line of said member and is foldable on the line 29 for the purpose later stated, and the flap 26 is foldably connected along it lower line to the outer cover 25.
To form the carton by folding, again referring to Fig. 6 and as may be readily understood therefrom, the outer side-forming members 12 and 13 are folded upwardly on the line of connection to the outer bottom 10, these members beingshown in Fig. 6 in such folded position, and the locking- tab members 16, 16 and 17, 17' are folded inwardly on the line of connection to the outer sideforming members 12 and 13, and interlocked, the members 16, 16 and 17, 17 being shown in such interlocked position; the locking-tabs thus forming the inner ends of the receptacle portion of the carton and locking the outer sides of the receptacle por tion together; the outer end-forming members 18 and 19 are folded upwardly on'the line of connection to the outer bottom 10 and into contact with the interlocked locking-tab members; the inner end-forming members 20 and 21 are folded downwardly on the line of connection to the outer enclforming members and carried over the lock ing tabs and the outer end-forming members, and the tension folds 22 and 23 are pressed down into contact with the outer bottom 10; the inner side forming and tensioning member 14 is folded upwardly on the line of connection to the outer sideforming member 13 and carried upwardly and over this member; the inner bottom 11 is folded upwardly on the line of connection to the side-forming and tensioning member 141 and carried over and pressed down into contact with the outer bottom 10, and the inner side-forming member 15 is folded upwardly on the line of connection to the inner bottom 11 and brought into contact with the outer side-forming member 12, the receptacle portion of the carton thus being arranged in operative folded form.
The inner cover 21- is folded downwardly on its line of connection to the inner sideforming member 15 and into covering position for the receptacle po1-tion,.and the outer cover 25, is folded downwardly on the line of connection to the outer side-forming member 12 and over the inner bottom 11, the flap 26 being tucked or inserted into the receptacle portion into engagement with the inner face of the tensioning member 14.
To form the easel-back or rest for the carton, referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6, the outer cover 25 is withdrawn from the receptacle portion and folded downwardly on the line of connection to the outer sideforming member 12, and upwardly on a line such as 29, extending parallel to the flap 26 and spaced therefrom the desired height of :the easel-back or rest; the flap 26 is folded upwardly on the line of connection to the cover 25 and tucked or inserted from the exterior of the bottom 10 into a horizontal out Or slit in the outer bottom 10, which cut or slit is spaced from the line of connection on the outer side forming member 12 to the outer bottom 10 substantially the desired height of the easel-back or rest, such slit preferably being curved downwardly for receiving the flap 26 more readily.' A triangular easel-back or rest thus is provided on the exterior of the outer bottom 10 for supporting the carton in an inclined position for displaying the contents. The inner, cover 24 is then turned or bent upwardly on the line of connection to the inner side-forming member 15 and permitted to stand in a position for displaying printed or other matter thereon.
Referring to Fig. 5, which shows the blank from which the carton is formed, the dotted lines denote scoring and the solid lines within the confines of Fig. 5 denote cuts, for folding the blank on the lines thereof.
The blank, which is of cardboard or other suitable material, in contour is cruciform,
.and comprises a main portion A and arms A A, the main portion A being in width the desired length of the carton.
The upper end or head of the main portion A, as viewed in Fig. 5, comprises the outer side portion 12 scored from the outer bottom portionlO at 36; the locking tabs 16 and 17 scored from the portion 12 at 39 and 40, separated from the arm portions A A by cuts at 37 and'38, and having the mterlockin ends 27 and 28; the outer cover portion 2:) seored'from the portion Bat 34; and
scored at 29 for folding to form the easel back; and the flap portion 26 scored from the portion 25 at 33.
The mid portion of the main portion A comprises the outer bottom portion '10 scored at 3(3 from the outer side portion 12 and scored at 11 from the outer side portion 13 and having the slit 30.
The right armportion A comprises the outer end portion18 scored from the portion at 454:; the inner end portion 20 scored from the portion 18 at 53; and the tension flap portion 22' scored from the portion 20 at 55. i a
The left arm portioirA comprises the outer end portion 19 scored from the portion 10 at'; the inner end portion 21'scored from the portion 19 at 54; and the tension flap portion 23 scored from the portion 21 at 56. I
The lower'end or leg of the main portion A comprises the outer side portion 13 scored from the inner side portion 14 at 47; the locking tabs 16 and 17' scored from the outer side portion 13 at 48 and 49 and separated from the arm portions 1 A by cuts 42. and 43, and having the interlocking ends 27 and 28'; the inner side portion 14 scored from the inner bottom portion 11 at 50; the inner bottom 'portion 11 scored from the inner side portion'15 at 51; and the inner side portion '15 scored from the outer cover portion 24 at 52. i
