Be it known that I, HENRY CHARLEs Gonn, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, residing at Princess Street and 5 Moray Place, in Dunedin, in the British "Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Nail Puller and Case Opener, of which the following is a specification.
10 The object of this invention is to provide a tool, preferably made or oval or round bar steel, and usually bent somewhat shaped having specially formed ends for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
15 One end is especially adapted for pulling nails of the various shaped heads used for nailing up packing cases or the like and the other end is adapted for such purposes as breaking wire or hoop-iron, and is also adapted for use as a screw-driver if? screws are encountered, and the tool also embodies means for ripping the metal of lined cases.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:l igure 1 is a side elevation 01 the tool, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the nail'pulling end. Fig. 3 a plan view of the wire or band breaking portion of the tool, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the slanting groove showing the chisel portion for ripping the metal of lined cases, at the inner end of the said groove.
The remaining figures are details to a larger scale. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 5-5 (F 1), showing the beveled sides of the tapered groove, and l? and 7 are views similar to Fig. 5 showing modified forms of the device for pulling: different nail heads. l 8 is a cross-sect ion throug rh line 8---t% (l igs. l, 3 and i), showing the cutting edges for breaking; wire or the like.
A. is the body of the tool, which is preferably round or oval in cross-section; and B U is one end thereof, which is bored out and slotted so as to form a tapered groove ad apted to be forced under nail-heads, assisted by a blow from a hammer on the roughened face of the butter B which can be used as r a hammer itself when needed, for replac- QO ing lids or the like.

The bevelingshown at B, 5, is preferred for sunk-headed nails, but the other forms shown in Figs. 6 and 7 better adapt themselves to other shaped heads. See B B The beveled slot shown in Fig. 8 is actuated by a sideways movement of the tool, while the cutting chisel point C shown at the inner end, is used for ripping. Whichever portion of the tool is being used, the other end forms a convenient and guiding handle for using; it. The tool may be made in any suitable size of any suitable material.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to patent is 1. A tool of the character described comprising a shank provided with an angular-1y bent part, said part having a flattened portion adjacentone end, said portion being formed with a slot in a plane intersecting the flat surfaces of said portion and the terminal edge thereof, thereby bifurcating said portion, one of said bifurcations being provided. with a chisel edge and the other terminating in a blunt edge in advance of said chisel edge, the walls of said slot being formed with shearing edges.
