Be it known that CrrEsMAN B.- ZELLER, a citizen or the United States, residing at lVichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotter-Pin Extractors, of which the following is a speci- .fication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cotter pin extractors and has for its principal object to provide a tool which will readily and easily remove cotter pinsfrom various parts of machinery in a manner which will prevent the machinery from becoming damaged due to the use of the tool in extracting the cotter pins;
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cotter pin extractor of the above mentioned character, wherein means is provided [for enabling the head of the cotter pin to be supported in position so as to enable the extractor to readily disengage the pin from its seated position.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cotter. pinextractor of the above mentioned character, which can be readily and easily adjusted to engage the cotter pin and is furthermore provided with a handle whereby the cotter pin may be quickly removed from its seated position regardless of how fast the cotter pin may be secured in the machinery.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a. cotter pin extractor which is sini ple in construction, inexpensive, strong, durable and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my cotter pin extractor showing the same in use.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the extracting member or rod, and
Figure 3 is a detail view of the handle.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an elongated tubular member which is formed of any suitable material. Slidably mounted in the tubular member 1 is the elongated extracting rod 2. The up- Serial N0. 667,272.
per portion of the rod 2 is externally thread ed as shown at 3 in the drawings and the lower end terminates into a hook portion 4. The extracting member or rod 2 is further more provided with a longitudinally extending slot oprovided in the lower portion of the same in a manner as more clearly shown in Fi 2 of the drawings and for the purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.
The extracting rod 2 is adapted to be received in the tubular member 1 and when in position therein the upper threaded end is adapted to extend beyond the upperend of the tubular member 1 in the manner as more clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and the purpose of this arrangement is to provide a means for permitting the internally threaded head 6 of a suitable handle 7 to be threaded thereon whereby a means is provided for actuating the elongated extracting rod 2 in the tubular memher 1.
In order to prevent the extracting rod 2 from rotating when the same is in use and operation, the tubular member 1 is provided intermediate its ends with the registering apertures 8 which are arranged diametrically opposite each other and adapted to be seated in these registering apertures 8i and extending through the longitudinal slot 5 provided in the lower portion of the extending rod 2 is the pin 9. The free ends of the pin 9 may be bent downwardly against the outer faces of the tubular member so as to prevent accidental displacement of the pin when in position therein. The pin 9 will extend through the slotted portion of the extracting member 2 and will prevent the same from rotating in the tubular member although it will permit the rod to be moved longitudinally therein.
In use, with the parts arranged as shown in F ig. 1 of the drawings, the hook portion 4 of the extracting rod 2 extends beyond thelowcr end of the tubular member 1 and is adapted to engage the head of the cotter pin in the well known manner. When in this position the hook portion el of the ex tracting rod 2 extends beyond the lower end oi the tubular member 1 and is adapted to engage the head of the cotter pin in the well known manner. Upon rotation of the handle 7, the threaded portion 3 of the extract ing member 2 will be caused to move upwardly through the tubular member 1 and the threaded head 6 of the handle and at the same. time cause the hook portion 4 to be drawn into'the bottom portion or end of the tubular member lsimultaneously causing the cotter pin to be Withdrawn f-roin its clinched or seated position in the particular part in which it is used. lt'wil l thus be seen i rom the foregoing description that a cotter pin extractor has been provided wherein the variousparts may be easily and quickly set up in position for use and does not require the employment of auxiliary or extra tools in order to remove the cotter pin from its sea-t ed position in the various parts ofv the machinery. Furthermore the simplicity with which my cotter pin: extractor is opera-ted enables the same to readily and easily remove cotterpins which have become clinched and are very hard to be removed and furthermore coir siderable t-nne is saved in removing the cotter pins- From theiforegoing description of the construction of m v improved apparatus, it
will be seenthat l have provided a simple,
inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out theol-iJect-s o-fthe invention, and while I have particularly described the elements of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of theprinciples of the invention.
What I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-- I i 'A cotter pin extractor of the class de scribed, incl-titling a] tabular body member, an extracting" rod slidably mounted therein, said extracting rod provided with a hook at its lower end, the" upper portion of said rod being threaded externally and the upper end thereof adapted to extendbeyond the upper cndof said tubular body member, a handle threaded on the upper end ofsaid rod for actuating the' same longitudinally in said t'uf b'ular body member, said rod provided with a longitudinal slot in its lower portion, and a pin carried by'sa id tubular bo'dfy meinber and extending transversely tln'ougli said longitudinal? slot' for permitting the longitudinal movement of said rod in said tuba:
