' J. E. HANCOCK DUMPING GRATE Filed June 7, 1923 Patented Apr. 21, 1925.
- UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Jnssn n. HANCOCK, ORIDU roN'r, snonsrn.
DUM'PING GnA'rE.
Application filed June 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat 1, Jesse l lancoon, citizen of the United States,,residing at Du Pont, in the-county of Clinch and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Dumping Grates, of which the following is a speoificatimi.
'ihisinvcntion relates to dumping grates, such as are shown in my copendi'ng-application, Eerial Number 590,088, filed September 2S, 1922, the said application hav ing since become Patent Number 1,460,242
and has specialreference to a novelarrangement for holding the dumping sectlons yieldably "against dumping Tmoveme-nt at times, or in. dumping position at other times.
One iniiportant object of the invention 1s to provide an improved andfsimpliiied means whereby the dumping sections of grates of this character will be normally held in. horizontal or fuel supporting p'osltion.
A second important object of the inven tion is to provide novel means whereby said sections may be locked in either horizontal or tilted position according to the wishes of the operator.
.In this instance, the invention contem-v plates certain novel arrangements of yield able supporting means and locklng devices cooperating to produce the desired results,
and such means will be hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification, and set forth specifically in the nnttter claimed.
In these ('h-awings, the same reference characters are used for the same parts throughout, and t Fig. 1 is a plan view of a dumpmg grate constructed in accordance with this invention, one of the grate sections being shown in horizontal position, and the other being. tilted. i
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of. one form of lock for the tilting bar.
,Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a second form of lock therefor.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the main frame of the invention, and in this main frame are supported a pair of dumping sections 11, which are provided at their ends with journal portions 12 carried in bearings 13 on the underside of the frame 10. These bearings are ar- 1923. Serial No. 643,903.
ranged in alinement at the front and back portions of the frame so that the dumping sections dump laterally. Each of the journal sections are provided with a squared portion 14 whereon is fitted an arm 15 having aseries of openings 16 therein. At each end of the frame 10,there is provided a centrally disposed bracket 17, and to each arm 15 is connected a spring 18 which has its ren'iaining end connected to the bracket 17, the spring 18 being hooked into any one of the openings 16 according to the leverage and stress desired to be exerted on the arm 15. These ends 141 also carry levers 19 which are connected by links 20 with the lower ends of levers 21 extending upward to a suitable slot 22 in the deck 23 of the main frame. By the oscillation of the levers 21 in their respective slots, it will be obvious that the dumping frames may be tilted against the action of the springs 18,
thesesprings normally holding said frames horizontal, and this horizontal position is assured by reason of the upstanding ends of the levers 21 engaging against shoulders 2% formed by off-setting the ends of the slot 22.
In each of the forms shown, suitable keepers are provided whereby the levers may be locked in position either with the dumping sections 11 horizontal, or with the sections in dumping position, and in the form shown. in Fig. 3, these keepers comprise each a hinge-like structure having a leaf 25 fixed to the deck 23, and a second leaf 26 notched as at 27 and foldable over the respective end of the slot 22, the arrange ment being such that when the lever'2t is held in the notch, it will be against the shoulder 24: while, when this lever bears against the other end of the movable leaf.
it is held in tilting position. In place of 4, in one position being locked to prevent dumping of the grate, and in the other position being locked to hold the grate dumped. Notches may be provided in these levers 21 to engage the edges of the L-shaped members 28, if desired.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the invention provides a device which is simple in construction, but yet is eflicient in operation. It will be plain to those skilled in the art that certain modifications may be made in the form and construction of the invention withoutdeparting from its material principles, and it is accordingly desired that it be understood, that not only the precise forms shown in the drawings and hereinbefore described, are to be considered as my invention, but also all modifications thereof which may fall within the scope claimed.
I claim:
1.111 a grate of the class described, a main frame, alined bearings on said main frame, a dumping frame having alined journals receivable in said bearings, arms projecting downward from said bearing, said arms being provided with a plurality of spring end receiving openings, springs engaged in selected openings in said arms, means on the main frame for securing said springs thereto under tension, other arms projecting downwardly from said journals, rocking levers pivoted to the main frame, and links connecting said rocking levers and the last mentioned arms.
2. In a grate of the class described, a main frame, alined bearings on said main frame, a dumping frame having alined journals receivable in said bearings, arms projecting downward from said bearing. said arms being provided with a plurality of spring end receiving openings, springs engaged in selected openings in said arms, means on the main frame for securing said springs thereto under tension, other arms projecting downwardly from said journals, rocking levers pivoted to the main frame, links connecting said rocking levers and the last mentioned arms, and means to hold the rocking levers in selected positions.
3. In a grate of the class described, a main frame, alined bearings on said main frame, adumping frame having alined journals receivable in said bearings. arms projecting downward from said bearing, said arms being provided with a plurality of spring end receiving openings, springs engaged in selected openings in said arms, means on the main frame for securing said springs thereto under tension, other arms projecting downwardly from said journals. rocking levers pivoted to the main frame. links connecting said rocking levers and the last mentioned arms, means to hold the rocking levers in selected positions, said means each comprising a member pivoted to the main frame and movable to swing across the path of the respective rocking lever intermediate its extreme positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my sign ature.
JESSE E. HANCOCK.
